My daughter just sent me a screenshot of her Moto G sat in system recovery with it saying it was installing an update from the SD Card with something from opda.com.cn can anyone shed any light on this?

Phone is fully stock running lollipop.

All I can say is er, get an iPhone and then this wouldn't happen!
No at al helpful so I will just go and get my coat for the umpteenth time!!

Looks like you got as far as me.

As for the iPhone thing being more secure it's not possible to happen on a stock Android phone either, by default they cannot install things outside of Google Play you have actually allow it in your security settings.

They seem to be a phone recycling site. They do have a forum which seems to be similar to XDA Developers. I'd guess someone has tried to root the phone and flash a custom ROM.

Hmmm all a bit weird this, shes not back from her night shift yet but i have a feeling its going to be a factory reset job which she wont be too happy about.

the worrying thing is how its ended up in recovery mode and and it has installed something, i have told her to cut all data connections until i get to see it.

I've just downloaded the screenie to my PC to take a closer look and in the background there is the HTC logo so something is amiss, i am wondering if it is a failed attack of some kind.

Was it bought new or second hand?

Brand new and sealed up for Christmas, i had to split it all open just to make sure it worked before it was wrapped up.

It's not an attack, but it's a bit strange it was trying to do an update from that site since its simply a site like XDA. Seems to me someones been playing about with the phone. Does she have a boyfriend who may have done this purely by accident maybe?

Any chance you could upload the screenie here?

It shouldn't happen on any Android phone, unless you deliberately make an effort you can't install apps outside of Google Play, and you can't install system updates that weren't signed by the phone's manufacturer

Does the Moto G now take an SD card? Mine's a year old, and it doesn't.

Moto G 4G and the newer version of the G both take a memory card.

Hmm seems likely someone has tried flashing something here, seems highly unlikely to just happen without the user doing something slightly unusual.

I have said many times to people I know, that you should always switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when it's not being used.

Things like this happen.

I would do a full factory reset and clear out any junk on the phone.

iPhones can be hacked as well with a bit of work.

Thanks. I've since found that the Moto G is now divided into (2013) and (2014). I bought mine in February 2014, so it's the old version.

The screenie she sent me was in her words "just an example dad, i downloaded that so you could see what was happening". Stupid girl!

So sorry about that everyone, it would seem she has lead us all on a wild goose chase.

Seeing the phone in action it did end up in recovery but not because of an external source. When i have looked at it there is something up though because as you are using it it is going mad with errors and force closes a plenty and then its just packing in with a reboot.
