Exactly. The exact same thing happened over on the Worst TV Adverts thread. I then said pretty much the same thing as you did (politely suggesting that Worst Advert forum was the wrong place and they should move the discussion to either Politics or General Discussion section) as well as providing the statistic that 60% of adult brits bet on the Grand National race and that 80% of people fully support the running of the race.
I was then asked for proof of my stats (I think they thought I'd made them up) so I gave them a link directly to the actual report.
After that the whole thing kind of ended except for one final posting saying that I was trying to dictate what could be discussed. I then ended it by replying that all I did was suggest that a light hearted thread on bad advertising was not the place for a political/moral debate, whilst at the same time giving people statistical facts to counter-balance the anti horse racing mobs moral outrage.
I then wished both sides of the debate well and that I wouldn't be engaging anymore with the subject, leaving both sides with my logic that on this matter that everyones opinion is the right one, as this is a moral issue and if you find horse racing cruel then don't support it, but please don't try and heavy hand or shoehorn your morale opinion into some kind of 'better than thou' highground against those who disagree or don't support your personal moral outlook.
