I watched 'The hunters' with Rolf Lassgard and found it uneasy viewing: seeing a small community with a close-knit group of "wrong 'uns" - and nearly everyone including police turning a blind eye.
It's funny that the same story set in the US would not have gripped me and it would have fitted in so well: honest city cop returns to roots in rural community with gun culture, hunting and too-easygoing lawmen. Were they scared or just felt 'community' more important than the law? Anyway, I thought that was pretty good; thanks for the tip-off Straker. |

DVD is in Amazon's 4 for £10 sale for anyone that missed it. Tagline is a bit desperate: "From the distributor of The Killing and The Bridge".

Another Rolf Lassgard premiere on at 10 tonight on BBC4. If it's like last week it won't be on iPlayer so watch it or miss it.

On the ratings thread someone* asked "Anyone got the rating for Arne Dahl on BBC4?" Quote:
EP1: 0.52M / 2.4%
EP2: 0.44M / 2.5% Still going very nicely. *Edit: oh, it was you who asked Straker! |

I missed it. Was it good?
It was good although a tad slow but any opportunity to watch Peter Stormare in action is always welcome. He was the main bad guy in the first season of Prison Break and omni-present on US TV and in American films but I've not seen him in foreign language stuff before. Watching him square up against man-bear Rolf was a treat although like last weeks movie it became unrealistically unhinged at the end and believability was sacrificed on the altar of hysterically ramped-up drama. This one is on iPlayer and was available to stream live so they must have different rights to The Hunters last week which is a bit odd as they were surely bought as a package. Doesn't seem to be any more next week so perhaps we're up to date now in that series although I wouldn't be averse to more of them. .... Thanks for that rating. It's not good although it's better than it deserves! |

Tonight at 9pm BBC4:
"New: The Young Montalbano 1/6. The Man Who Followed Funerals: A man who shows up at other people's funerals mourning... " Does 'new' really mean new (to us) ? Do any of the other new programmes in this subtitled drama clash with this well-established time-slot on BBC4? Reminder: Deutschland 83 Sunday C4 9pm |

Yes it's new to us - we haven't seen this second series if that's what you mean.

I must say I am very surprised that no UK/Sky channel has picked up this superb series.
Actually, I just relocated that article ... http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-ra...work-tv-review ... and apparently although made by Canal+ it has actually already been shown in a slightly censored form on the NBC owned Esquire Network in the US. |

Spin was very good I thought - Sort of a French Borgen.
Three ad breaks in the first 45 minutes though tested my patience to breaking point. I like the idea they're talking about in the US where there's half as many ads but they charge the advertisers twice as much for the slots. That can't come here soon enough! Wish they'd continue with the double-bills though as it's going to see much less substantial with only one 45 minute ep next week. |

I'm stacking the ad free versions of Deutschland 83 from Sky's on demand to watch over a few nights. Most likely do the same with Spin.

Straker: "Spin was very good I thought - Sort of a French Borgen."
Agreed, Spin was very good. The announcer just before it started said "think Borgen meets House of Cards, but set in Paris". Good description. More Young Montalbano at 9pm on BBC4. |

I've just watched the first four episodes of Spotless and so far it really is a fantastic crime drama although it does require a strong stomach! For those who don't know it's a French produced show but set in London. The two leads are French and French-Canadian but mostly speak in English except when there are occasional flash-back scenes to a central mystery when they talk in French. The version that is readily available doesn't have subtitles for these parts but it doesn't seem to matter; if anything it just adds to the intrigue.

Round-up for now and handy for future reference
Young Montalbano finished on Saturday 6th Feb. Coming next Sat 13th Feb on BBC4: Trapped Quote:
A small town on the edge of Iceland, with a terrible secret buried in its past. A gorged and mutilated body is found in the fjord as a blizzard arrives with deadly force. No way in, no way out – Trapped.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/lat...s/2015/trappedSounds good. It's 10 one hour episodes, showing two each week at 9pm Sat on BBC4. Deutschland '83 on Channel 4 comes to an end this Sunday 14th Feb on C4 9pm Spin (Les Hommes de L'Ombre) series one finished last Friday 5th Feb on More4, to be followed this Friday 12th Feb by series two. Is there a thread yet for Trapped? I suggest keeping news of new series on this thread rather than (or as well as) in threads of 'current' series. |
