Humax 2000T - no sound

This keeps happening to me... I turn it on and there's no TV sound. If I switch to the television tuner or the one in my DVD recorder it's fine, but the only fix for the Humax is to pull the mains plug out at the back to reset it. This isn't a great solution if it's already recording something.

I've Googled this and have found that other people have been having this problem since last year. Any theories?

Have you tried toggling the sound format on the 2000T?

No - it only happens occasionally.

Mine does this as well. I found I could get sound if I put both tv and box in standby and then brought the Humax out of standby first and then the tv second. This solution was thwarted when the Humax wouldn't come out of standby at all. I took it back to Curry's and by then it had decided to work. I don't put the box in standby anymore so I now bring the tv out of standby, switch it off at the mains for a couple of minutes and the switch the mains on. As you say. it's a pain if it's recording a programme.

This happened to my Sister's 1800T yesterday. She wanted to watch something that she was already recording, but had to wait over an hour for it to finish so she could power cycle the box to get the sound back.

Looking round the net, it looks like this problem has been around for 18 months or so!.

Surely they should have fixed this by now with updated firmware?

I worked around this issue by connecting up RCA cables to my Sony TV. One of my HDMI ports on the TV allows for audio input via RCA, which means I get digital HDMI video, but audio is supplied via analogue RCA. Since I've done this some months ago, I have had no problems and the audio is fine; hasn't once failed. Prior to doing this, the sound issue plagued me daily.

This might not work for you, it depends on the TV allowing this and that the HDMI port defaults to the audio supplied via RCA. Still, it might be worth a try if this silly sound issue is getting too much.

Well my sister's box has decided to mute the sound again, this time for good. She can't get it back even after a power cycle.

She has had it just over 3 months, so will be taking it back to Argos for a refund. Obviously a replacement will only have the same design fault.

Even though I've never owned a Humax myself, I always thought they were a decent manufacturer.

They are a decent manufacturer. This is a handshake issue between your TV and the Humax. If possible make sure the HDMI lead runs direct from the Humax to your TV and make sure CEC is set to off on your TV.

I had this issue but doing the above cured it.

I have the 2000TT and lose sound if I watch another device through another HDMI source and can only get sound back by switching off at the mains,

What's CEC? I've never heard of it and can't find any reference to it on Google.

I fail to see how you can't find it on google? - here's one of MANY links it finds:

It's the generic term for HDMI control. Different manufacturers call it different things though, LG for example call it SIMPLINK.

The HDMI lead was connected directly to the TV. It was tried in both HDMI sockets on the TV, with the same result in both. Her TV is a samsung UE32H5000. I downloaded the manual & couldn't find any mention of CEC or ANYNET+, so I assume this model doesn't have it.

I notice that this problem has been around for a few years now with no resolution.

She has received a refund from Argos now anyway with no hassle & she bought my spare Youview DN372T, saving herself £100.

But putting CEC into Google doesn't find it. You have to know what it actually is to enter something more meaningful.

Anyway, having acquired a TalkTalk YouView box I lent the Humax to my dad and the problem's even worse on his TV. There is frequently no sound and the remote often fails to function altogether. He has no options at all regarding hdmi communication, but I might have left something called Regza link switched on with my Toshiba, so I might try that if I get it back again.

Yet again, the Humax failed to respond to any buttons on the remote tonight. I tried pressing the PVR button and the TV button, but nothing worked. In the end I had to switch it off by using the On/Off button on the front of the device. Still wouldn't work.

Then, after trying every button on the remote it suddenly sprang to life and brought up the channel list on the left hand side of the screen. Once that appears it's then possible to get onto the programme guide. I still haven't found out either what stops it working or what starts it working again. The batteries are fine, by the way.

I haven't followed your issue, but have you checked that the infra-red output LED on the handset works as expected? You can do that easily enough with almost any digital camera (camcorder, smartphone/tablet etc). Just put the camera into live mode, point it at the front of the handset and observe the viewfinder/screen whilst pressing buttons - you should see a bluish white flicker each time.
If that is OK you should also look for other sources of IR interference. Is there another handset in a pile of books on the table (for instance) which could be transmitting? Or flourescent / energy saving lamps, bright sunlight.
Does the PVR operate from the front-panel buttons at all?

Apologies, but I've only just caught up with this reply. I have two remotes for the Humax, one of which has a faulty Guide button (a common problem it seems). This old one is now the only one that seems to work at all – can it really be possible that the two are interfering with each other? I would have expected both of them to work together.

Update... well this is a weird one, because although the red lights were flashing on the handset, I put new batteries in and suddenly all was well. I assumed that if the lights were flashing an infra-red signal was being generated, but it seems this might not be the case.

My recent experience supports your 'handshake issue' theory!
I recently fitted an HDMI switch between the Samsung tv and Humax 2000T with a Sony DVD player plugged into another slot on the switch.
Almost immediatelly on switching tv on had loss of sound-only cure was to pull psu cord out of rear of Humax and repower.
Sound ok until switched on next time!
Removing HDMI switch cured the problem!
Switch was from a good manufacturer-Neet I think?
Life never gets easier does it!!!!!

My 2000T went weird the other day - I couldn't do anything with it and the remote was causing the TV to change onto analogue channels!. Rebooting did nothing and in desperation I "rebooted" the remote by taking a battery out and re-inserting it. That gave success!

Completely weird, I've never heard of rebooting a remote.

If only they'd re-done the 9200. That really was a superb machine until it started choking up with extra muxes and more channels per mux. I wish that I'd never bought this 2000T. I also get occasional loss of sound but I don't need to reboot it, I just change the watched channel and back. I've had my rant in the past about the complete wrong-working of the aspect ratio controls.
