James Corden having a bit of fun with the American audience by having a 'chef' on called Patrick Vieira, given Americans well known ignorance of all things 'soccer' related not many will get the joke.
A new year, same segment this time with 'Gilles Grimandi'. I don't watch League Of Their Own but I'm guessing Corden's an Arsenal fan.

But there's no question that his bandleader is a revelation and the perfect straight man, unlike Jon Batiste on Colbert who is lacking.

Using footballers (soccer) to play the chef in this sketches seems to be a bit of an ‘in joke’ amongst British viewers (which is weird considering it doesn’t air in the UK!).

I’m still not convinced about Reggie Watts, I think as a comedian he’s just not my type. For me the best bands in late night, for music and their parts in sketches, are ‘The Basic Cable Band’ on Conan and ‘The Roots’ on The Tonight Show. Best ‘sidekicks’ are Andy Richter on Conan and Steve Higgins on The Tonight Show. And I did use to love Geoff Peterson, the gay robot skeleton sidekick, on Craig Fergusons incarnation of The Late Late Show.

I really can't stand Steve Higgins, he must have got a free pass from Lorne Michaels. Andy Richter is okay but cramps Conan's style by being seated so close. I much prefer the interplay between Conan and his foil Jordan Schlansky.

Geoff was so good he basically took over the show but his wierdness and improvisation and sarcasm are also what I like about Reggie Watts.

I’ll admit it’s weird how I liked the weird humour of Geoff Peterson but not that of Reggie Watts. I can’t explain it.
I also used to like the relationship between David Letterman and Paul Schaffer.

I agree, Conan’s interaction with Jordan (and the rest of his staff back stage staff) is some of the best in the late night genre. I believe there was a segment this week where Conan, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube took a staff member on a driving lesson around LA, I’ll be watching that later when I catch up.

Corden is a West Ham fan.
Not sure why the connection with Grimaldi. Perhaps the producer or one of the writers is an Arsenal fan, or it was just a name that popped out in conversation/writing.
His good friend Jack Whitehall is an Arsenal fan.

I agree about Watts. I think he is a great addition to the show.

I also agree about Batiste. He is pretty dreadful.
All he seems to say is "yeaaaahhhhh".

It's just the name. It's not the actual footballer.

Ohhhhhh, knowing next to nothing about football myself I assumed it was the actual footballers playing the chef (you know, sort of doing a cameo whilst on holiday in LA)... well that’s embarrassing!

Adele does the singing in the car bit with James. Would have been funny if after 30 seconds she apologised and said that's all I've got time for.

It airs in full on tomorrow nights (Wednesday) show.

Interestingly it was obviously filmed in the UK, you can tell by the right hand drive car (and the god awful weather outside!). All the others to date have been filmed in LA (with Corden on the other side of the screen/car), I guess it was done while he was back here for Christmas.

If I was them I'd drop at least a couple of sketches.

Celebrity Nose and Giles Grimandi
The first just isn't funny. As for the second it's obviously there for Reggie to do his song, so just let him do a song or standup.

The emoji bits and Bring it back/kick it out for me. Side Effects May Include is too similar to Fallon's Pros and Cons.

The Adele carpool karaoke felt very natural. I think it's been mentioned before on here that James doesn't drive but a vehicle tows them and from about 12:45 of the video onwards it becomes more and more evident with James barely touching the steering wheel! Also all the shots of the car are from the back and you can see what looks like a white vehicle through the front windscreen.

I think a lot of the show is 'inspired' by Fallon's Tonight Show, but I can understand why given Fallon has the most successful late night show now and for many years.
For me I'd drop Celebrity Noses, it might have been funny once, but it doesn't need to be a reoccurring bit.

For those who don't know, CBS has given the coveted 'post Super Bowl' slot to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the first time its ever been given to a late night show. And they've given the slot after that (well after the local news) to The Late Late Show with James Corden. It should undoubtedly be the biggest audience the show has ever had, and I'm hearing they've got some amazing things lined up for it, including a rumoured Elton John carpool karaoke.

The Late Late Show has really found its groove, Late Night might be doing better but that's to be expected since Late Night has a higher lead in with The Tonight Show compared to The Late Show

I know it's been mentioned that Corden is doing a lot of things that have been done before but it's getting quite noticeable now if you watch a lot of chat shows.

He recently did the piano routine from Big.
At least when Jonathan Ross did it he had Tom Hanks with him.

I am, and still enjoying it.
I also watch Conan, The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. I'll occasionally watch the Late Show with Stephen Colbert too. I've never really watch Seth Myers, not because I don't like him, there's just only so many of the late night talk shows I can watch each week!

Never heard of Seth Myers.

I'd put Corden down as my second favourite chatshow at the moment.

Ross is first. Colbert is ok.
Norton has gone down hill. Carr isn't as good as it used to be either.

I'm not counting Oliver as a chatshow.

Any reason why Corden is off again this week?

Search here is pathetic, so go watch Green Wing instead of the little twee guy. You won't be sorry.

Fair enough, I’m never quite sure whether to include Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in my list of ‘talk shows I watch’ either, because, you’re right, it’s not actually a talk show. Even though it just won ‘Best Talk Show’ at the Critics Choice Awards (beating Corden, Norton, etc.). I include it in the same sort of genre though just becuase I don’t know what else to group it with!

No idea why Corden is on hiatus again this week, he’s only been back 3 weeks and he’s off again! If I had to guess, I’d say he might be pre-taping some stuff for his big post-Super Bowl show next weekend.

Green Wing? The medical comedy that was on Channel 4? Why would I watch that if I was looking to watch a late night talk show, they are totally different programmes? I think we know you don’t like James Corden, so why are you still posting in this thread?

I wonder if they thought of doing it live like Colbert?

Maybe it would be a bit too late for that and disorganised depending how the rest of the night goes.

Btw, I've watched Green Wing. No need for me to watch it again. Especially as an alternative to a chat show.

Details of The Late Late Show with Jame’s Corden’s post-Super Bowl special (which airs this Sunday on CBS) have been released.

Guests include Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick and Adam DeVine, and there’ll be a Carpool Karaoke with Elton John. It’ll also be recorded in the shows regular studio in LA, not on location at the game.

Unlike The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s post-Super Bowl special, Corden’s show won’t air ‘live’, instead it’ll be recorded about an hour before broadcast. It’ll air at the earlier than usual time of 11:30pm on the East Coast, and 8:30pm on the West Coast.

What did everyone think of the Super Bowl special?

I really enjoyed it, and actually thought it was a lot better than The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Super Bowl special which aired directly after the game. Highlights for me were the Elton John Carpool Karaoke, the losing fans watching the show from the car park, and the closing song with Boyz II Men.

In terms of ratings, the Super Bowl itself got 111 million viewers with a 32.1 demo, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Super Bowl special (at 11pm) got 21.1 million viewers with a 7.9 demo, and The Late Late Show with James Corden (at 12:30am) got 4.96 million viewers with a 1.7 demo.
I was expecting Corden to get higher ratings, but when you consider that by the time it eventually aired it was in its regular 12:30am slot I suppose those numbers are still very good.

Colbert's show was definitely a missed oppurtunity. Clearly the opening skit with the football tossing and Will Ferrell's bit were meant to be the highlights but only Megyn Kelly's bit was interesting.

I concur with Degsy that Reggie's contrived singing over the host bit has worn thin particularily as his song was just repeating half time over and over. But otherwise I liked the bit with his parents and Elton and Chris Martin of course.

I don't think being live added anything to the Colbert show. I guess they had to be as there wouldn't be enough time to edit for the correct result/interviews like Corden did.

I liked the Ferrell segment and how he kept brushing off Zoolander questions.

For me the live Super Bowl special of Colber just felt like a regular show, nothing special. But the Super Bowl special of Corden felt like it was something a bit special (which it was) and that more effort had been put into it.
