Stephen Colbert and James Corden have posted ratings highs due to Biden's appearance on Colbert who once again is subject to rumours about a time-swap with Corden although interestingly the source that broke the story, NY Post's Page Six, just as quickly went back on it. link

I don't see a time swap happening, I assume Colbert has a guarantee number of years in that slot before CBS can do anything or they have to pay him off.

Also I think Corden wouldn't improve much on Colberts numbers and I fear he'd get slaughtered since it's a similar show to Fallon's.

What has Madonna done to her face. It's completely immobile. She was good fun though.

If Joe Biden’s appearance on ‘The Late Show’ had such an impact on its ratings (and those of ‘The Late Late Show’ as a knock on effect), I’d be interested in knowing what Senator Bernie Sanders’ appearance on ‘Conan’ had on its ratings. Can’t find anything on the web though, but it must have given a significant boost.

I totally agree. Colbert must have a time slot guarantee in his contract, and his ratings aren’t so bad that CBS would consider paying that off. The biggest mistake Conan O’Brien’s people made when he took over ‘The Tonight Show’ in 2009 was to not include a time slot guarantee in his contract with NBC. This resulted in them being able to move ‘The Tonight Show’ from 11:35pm to 12:05am (to bring back Jay Leno at 11:35pm), something Conan wasn’t willing to accept and ultimately resigned as host. I’m sure Colbert’s people took notice at that when negotiating his contract with CBS.

Also, the rumour appears to have originated from the news that ‘The Late Show’ producers are scouting studios in LA. If James Corden was to replace Colbert (and therefore The Late Show would probably move to LA) it’s likely he would retain his current production staff. That’s generally the done thing, the host takes their team with him, not a straight ‘host swap’. I also suspect he’d retain his current studio location too, again questioning the validity of the rumour.

And finally, I agree that having Corden in direct competition with Jimmy Fallon with foolish – they are essentially targeting the same audience, and Fallon would win that battle. The current line up is perfect as Fallon and Colbert are going after different audiences at 11:35, and Corden and Seth Meyers are going after different audiences at 12:35.

I don’t think it’s going to happen. Not now at least.

Colbert can sit easy. Seems he's beat out all the other late night hosts in online views and will likely continue to do so as long as the media obsession with Donald Trump continues

So here’s the full list of ‘most online views in 2016’:
1: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
2: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
3: The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon
4: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
5: The Late Late Show with James Corden
6: Conan
7: Jimmy Kimmel Live
8: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

I’ll be honest, I’m amazed at that list – so much so that I’m wondering if the numbers have been massaged in some way...
I was sure Fallon would have topped the list. And that Corden would have been higher. I’m also surprised that Conan beat Kimmel (although as a Conan fan I’m please he did).
Of course it’s a little unbalanced... Conan, John Oliver and Samantha Bee upload considerably less videos than the likes of Fallon, Colbert and Corden.
But still, a rare victory for Stephen Colbert.

In other news, The Late Late Show with James Corden won the 2017 Critics Choice Award (yes, 2017 – they held both the 2016 and 2017 awards in the same year!?!) for best Talk Show – beating Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah and Samantha Bee.
Quite an impressive win for Corden, especially up against Oliver and Fallon.

The top 4 all did political stuff (some better than others) and uploaded it all. That's what they have in common. If Samantha Bee uploaded her takedowns, she'd be up there too.

I think Seth Meyers will break into that list next year. At the rate he's going, with A Closer Look he is racking up more weekly views than Colbert.

I'm surprised about Kimmel and Conan. What did Kimmel do this year that warranted online views? Was it Matt Damon or candy-related? Oh no wait...it was the Marvel stuff, right?

Tonight Show has 12.6m subscribers on Youtube. Way ahead of anyone else and still increasing by the day. How on earth people just keep discovering that show's Youtube channel is beyond me.

It was wasn't it, and probably botoxed to the hilt. Although compared to other carpools which have been natural and great fun, like Adele - I wasn't so sure with Madonna, if she was just going through the motions and couldn't really be ars, bothered. As you say though, maybe with any lack of expression it just seemed that way.

Yes, it being an election year must have been very influential on this list.
I can’t see Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah beating Jimmy Fallon next year (unless Trump continues to provide a load of material for them).

What are you surprised about with Conan – the fact that he got more views that Kimmel, or the face he’s on the list?
Last time I checked, although Conan had a much smaller audience than most of the others, he still had the largest young demo proportionally (and its the young demo who watch most online).

That Conan got more views than Kimmel although I still have no idea what Kimmel did to get into the list in the first place. It must have been something Marvel related.

I see, yes I was surprised Conan got more views than Kimmel too. I’m not really sure why, I guess just because Kimmel’s show is on network television and has many more viewers. I’m pleased for Conan though.
As for what got Kimmel on the list at all... I don’t watch the show so I don’t really know. But I know ‘Mean Tweets’ is quite popular, as is his Halloween candy thing you’ve already mentioned.

On a related note, Jimmy Kimmel actually tried to start a movement in 2008 which would have seen all the late night talk shows withhold all of their content from being uploaded online. He believed the immerging trend, at the time, of uploading each shows ‘highlights’ was counterproductive to the overall success of the programme. The thinking being that people would eventually stop watching the shows on television altogether (where the most money is still made) in favour of just catching the highlights on YouTube the next day. Kimmel’s people approached Letterman’s, Leno’s and Conan’s people to all sign up to this new initiative, but the overall consensus was that this would actually be a step backwards in the late night genre staying relevant.

It's the final week of 2016 of The Late Late Show this week... I wonder if they'll do a Christmas special on Thursday like they did last year.

I noticed that Sky One have a 'The Late Late Show Best of 2016' special at 10pm on Christmas Eve (after the A League of Their Own Christmas Special at 9pm). I wonder if this is something that's also airing on CBS or whether Sky have put it together...

Surprising considering Kimmel probably started the late night viral videos with his Matt Damon stuff.

Some clever pre-planning for Corden's Christmas carpool karaoke, . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKJExBXRorA
