My beautiful boy Zinda may well be put to sleep tomorrow. He is having a struggle standing and looks like his hips have finally given in, fell over twice today. We can't allow him to suffer

He's nearly 10 so quite a good innings for an Alsation. We have had him since he was 6 wks old.

Will get the vet here tomorrow but can't think there will be any good news.

Thanks all. He's been in his bed for 7 hours now and has shown no effort to move, I feel sorry for him.

You know your dog, you know when things are not right, you know that it's in your hands.

That's love.

He's just been out for a wee in the garden but it was a struggle.

The vet is making a house call at 12 to carry out the deed. Very, very sad

I really feel for you woodbush, i had to have my 18 year old dog put to sleep 7 weeks ago after 12 months of different problems.
I'm sure I did the right thing for him, but it hurts like hell every day still.

All the best to you, my thoughts are with you.

I remember your post about your lovely dog.

How very sad. It comes all of us who choose to keep a dog.

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Kudos to you for having the vet call round instead of taking him to the surgery.
You are doing a kind and loving thing.
Take care x

No it's not, but we have to do it... because it's not about us, it's about doing our best for an animal we love. I really feel for you, though. It's a terribly sad time but it always helps to focus on the excellent times you've had and also the silly habits they have and the daft things they do over the years. Good memories.

I'm sure there's not a single day Zinda would have chosen to spend differently (except, possibly, the day you named him) and that's what you need to remember.

And, when you're ready, there's another dog out there somewhere waiting to share his life with you.

Best wishes.

Thank you all for the lovely words, he's at peace now. We are in pieces, that's what love does. I miss him already

We can remember everything from the day we got him at 6 weeks.

I'm sorry you lost him, but glad he passed in the most lovely way a pet can - with those they love.
