Do you think it is time we see the return off either a new version of TOTP or CDUK to return?? or a new chart show?? I think we need one back on our screens as artist and acts don't have much scope for promotion now other then the odd tv appearance and Tours. I think a chart show will work if its done right.

What do you think?

Now the charts is moving to Friday I think it makes perfect sense to being back TOTP. It was a huge platform for artists and is hugely missed.

I am hoping that this is one of the reasons why they have moved the charts to a Friday to get us ready for the return of TOTP. It will help the singles charts as well as a lot more people will see the performances and might buy a single based on the performance.

I remember TOTP in the 90's but as didn't follow charts was it broadcast after the chart was announced and so was the actual correct chart.
CDUK was the day before meaning they had some mistakes from late sales etc. Like Five being given #1 on CDUK but in the official charts the next day Ricky Martin had actually done it.

TOTP charts were based on the official charts from the Sunday before

The CDUK charts were based on the commercial radio stations chart, which included airplay and so it always differed from the official chart.

If they do the official charts than that's good and I hope it does come back. There used to be some variety on the show from what I remember.

The show used to carry some weight also as I've read interviews with American and Australian acts mention TOTP as their memories of breaking in the UK and being asked for first time to appear.

They'd need realistic expectations for the show though as it's now a multi media and channel World so viewing figures could never compete with what has been in the past.

It was a sales chart, but it was compiled by an unofficial chart compiler, so didn't use as much data and was less reliable, and of course was only based on part of the week's sales.

The reason they are moving the chart is because the music industry has decided that all territories will have new releases on a Friday, so the chart needs to move accordingly so that it tracks Friday-Thursday rather than Sunday to Saturday as it does now.

I'd love TOTP to come back but unfortunately the powers that be at the BBC think it's too expensive and too niche. I don't get this though, since they used to sell the brand internationally - you'd think it'd be profitable.

Something needs to come back. Growing up in the late 90's/early 00's there was such variety on TV and I honestly credit that with one of the reasons I love music so much now. Particularly the likes of CD:UK and TOTP. I've always thought about this generation now and how they're missing out.

I definitely think something of that style needs to come back too. I didn't realise just how much I miss tuning in to stuff like that until watching the compilation shows of old TOTP performances and The Tube on BBC/ITV along with old 90s/00s clips of TOTP and CD:UK on YouTube. And looking at artist appearances, they were more varied than what I remember! It'd be nice to something like that return

Agreed. I loved TOTP & CD:UK. And Live & Kicking on BBC every Saturday morning. They used to review three songs every week with a panel of three celebrities.

Between all of these shows, I knew who was singing what in the charts - these days I rely on Shazam to find out artist & song.

January - March - Graham Norton
middle of March -beginning of April - The Voice UK
April - June - Graham Norton
Autumn - Christmas - The X Factor

In the Summer there is isnt really a big show for artists to perform on.

Also at the end of May there is the Britains Got Talent live shows

I'd love to see something like TOTP or CDUK return even T4 used to be good with Popworld at times.

CDUK was the pinnacle of my early teen years during Saturday lunchtimes. I miss those days, when the singers actually knew how to dance or at least had some nice, choreographed element to their performances.

This generation are growing up in the internet age - they have more choice available to them than a 30 minute TV show could ever achieve.

no. when those shows were popular there were less outlets for people to hear and see such material. now there are so many music video channels available to most people who want them, such as on freeview, freesat, sky and virgin. in addition to that, with the advent of the internet you can go online and just google what you want and can usually find a video on youtube or vimeo or daily motion or one of many other video streaming sites, without inane idiots and peadophiles in between the songs (well, depends on what sites you look at)

with those shows you often had to sit through a large chunk of the show playing tracks you didn't like to find the ones you did. now you can avoid that by recording music channels on a PVR and skipping through what you don't like, or just avoiding those tracks on youtube

Ive become such a casual music fan/buyer since the demise of music shows. I don't necessarily have the time to spend hours searching the internet 'discovering' new music or googling music videos...Im not glued to the internet.

If there was one show such as TOTP which I could watch live or on demand, where major and minor music artists could be showcased, I'm sure the casual music fans such as me would pick up interest in music once more...thus increasing sales and an artists profile.

you don't need to spend hours searching, you can find stuff in minutes. if you spent the amount of time searching and listening that you would have spent on watching a tv show which will have all sorts of filler and stuff you don't like, you are likely to find more things you do like. so if TOTP is 30 or 40 minutes long each week, spend 30 minutes one day a week or 15 minutes 2 or 3 days a week having a look. once you start finding sites and music you like you might get addicted and want to do more

I think this type of show could return, and I would happily watch it. I'd prefer it to be a CD:UK successor than a TOTP revival however; imo CD:UK was always the more fun show and had more of an edge. I'm sure I remember Simon Cowell was considering reviving TOTP a couple of years ago? If one of the shows was to return, as well as artist performances and the singles charts countdown, there should also be a streaming/download charts run through, just to reflect the current times.
