Happened yesterday, my hair looked ok when I went for a trim yesterday. When I came out it was about 2" shorter in lengh than I had asked for and my fringe, that I wanted to eyebrow length, was cut short so it was half way down my forehead.

Happened to me last time I went .Had my hair coloured and highlighted - got home , looked in the mirror - big grey stripe still right down the middle !! went back next day and she says " Oh I just thought you wanted highlights !" even though I'd said "can't wait for you to get rid of the greys "

I've never trusted them to do a good job, always expect the worst!

Went in for colour and cut and they did it wrong but wouldnt admit it. Had a brown all over dye (they talked me into it even though i asked for two colours). While she was rinsing it they all came over and started pulling at my hair and then one ran to the back to bring a mysterious bottle out.

Turns out my hair had gone bright carrot orange so they had to add something extra on to dull it down a bit!

To add to that they dont include a dry and style in their costs so i left with hair that was damp, orange and about 6 inches shorter than i asked for!

Thats bad! At my old hairdressers i had an appt with a lady who worked there but rented her space because she only worked part time. She dyed my hair stunningly and was cheaper than the others. I was thrilled.

The next day i was going to a wedding do and my sister styled my hair because i wanted the top layer up, then the rest straightened. My sister started sectioning my hair to straighten it and under the top layer there was a block of about 3 inches long where it was solid grey! So i could only wear my hair down.

It was like she had done my whole head but missed a chunk out. Sister reckons theres no way she didnt notice it when drying and styling so she probably didnt mention it and thought i would never see the middle layer of the back of my head!

Reading your posts I can imagine how you must be feel, because there is s*d all you can do when they make a mess of your hair you just have to wait for it to grow. I just don't get how hairdressers don't understand that when cutting wet hair the hair is longer than when it is dry. I told the hairdresser I wanted my hair shoulder length so I can tie it back, I can't now she decided to cut it shorter. When you cut a fringe that is to be eyebrow length you cut the hair when it is dry or make an allowance for it being wet. I have now got a silly looking short fringe that looks like I am trying to look like a 5 year old. I have given up having my haired coloured at the hairdressers now and just do it myself at home. .

All the time unfortunately. I have been to very expensive celebrity ones and bog standard suburban ones, the only times I have ever liked the cut was when a Japanese person did it. I have had several Japanese ones, both male and female, and they are the best hairdressers.

I dont think ever.... Ive had a few good haircuts but the styling wasnt right.. but in the main Ive had terrible haircuts, and never look like the picture I show them.. hairdressers seem to have vision different from me and funny how their magic scisssors like to cut off just that extra half ain inch you wanted to keep.. leaving you with no confidence and feeling like a stranger for weeks. Unless you find a good hairdresser who knows you and your hair.. stay away.. most havent an artistic bone in their body.. they dont know how to listen and have conversations about boyfriends or whatever with the stylist working close by.. if they dont concetnrate then its all lost..... I bought decent scissors and cut mine myself now.. and Im getting quite good at it... I know the angles to get my hair to sit how I like it ,as no one seems to know how to cut my wavy hair.. and and dont feel like crying as I leave my own salon in the loo...and it doesnt cost a penny.

I always trim my own hair as hairdressers just don't follow my instruction, if I say just take off an inch I really do just mean an inch.

I agree with you that hairdressers do not seem to understand wavy hair and just cut it like straight hair. I still feel annoyed every time I look at my silly short fringe now. and in future I will now just cut my fringe myself .....have you got any tips how you cut your hair please?

A 1" trim is 3" to so many hairdressers - may be they don't know what 1" is? They just seem to have their own agenda and cut your hair how they want to do it not how you want it

Like Faye, I always trim my hair when it's dry and I straighten my hair as straight as I can so that I can get an even cut as possible. Also you must make sure you use a pair of scissors that are very sharp, ideally for hair only. Don't be tempted to use the scissors for anything else as the blades will get blunt over time.

They are OK for colouring and trimming the ends but rubbish at styling - can do better myself - and I cut my own fringe. Not trusting them with that as they will always cut it too short and uneven.

I now colour my own hair. Some hairdressers do not seem to understand that a trim doesn't mean taking 3" off. After this last time ending up with a really silly, childish looking and uneven fringe I will always cut my fringe myself. I can just trim it until I have got the right length.

I honestly think a huge amount of hairdressers around focus too much on cutting hair into a certain style, and not considering the person's hair type, lifestyle etc.

It's no use giving someone with curly hair loads and loads of layers, for example, if they're not prepared to blow dry or straighten the sh*t out of it every morning but too often I've seen hairdressers do that sort of thing.

Personally I'm happy with my current hairdresser, I pay A LOT but it's worth it to me to have someone who actually listens to me and understands my hair type. I think the only way to find a good hairdresser these days is via recommendations.

I'm lucky as my friend is a hairdresser and cuts my hair, so she knows what I do and don't like about my hair.

But before I met her I had many bad hair styles and dyes.
I remember once when I was blonde i asked a hairdresser to dye my hair a light brown/caramel colour, she ended up doing it a really dark shade of brown, it really didn't suit me and I looked awful
