What Australia Watched: Sunday, May 17

Seven
18:00 Seven News: 1.45m
19:00 House Rules - Whole House Reveal: 1.15m
20:45 New: Catching Milat: 1.39m

Nine
18:00 Nine News Sunday: 1.27m
19:00 Reno Rumble: 0.84m
20:30 60 Minutes: 0.74m

Ten
18:00 Family Feud: 0.44m
18:30 Modern Family (R): 0.46m
19:00 Modern Family: 0.70m
19:30 MasterChef Australia: 1.04m
21:00 Shark Tank: 0.56m

Seven: 27.9% / Nine: 17.1% / Ten: 15.1%

That's much more like it for Seven. House Rules picked up well for the reveal episode, finally beating MasterChef in one of these head-to-heads. And what a great result that is for Catching Milat, the trailer for which you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1XyA0siLAE Might be one that gets picked up in the UK?

I think the heat has rather gone out of the ratings over the last month or so - lots of sub-par ratings for low profile programming on the main channels. I've certainly not been checking in as much as I was at the start of the year. BGT is the exception, of course, but it can't really drive all that much chat in isolation.

Likely to be a little quiet over a event-free summer, but things will pick up in September, as always!

Thanks Dancc.

Does ABC get much of a look in these days in terms of ratings?

It seems in the reality genre especially you are getting uber fans who hate any kind of criticism of their shows, obsess over minutae of these shows, and spend hours a day posting threads about BB housemates or XF contestants almost no one remembers.
Sorry to say while each to their own, and I do know a few people who watch these shows who probably just regard them as entertainment, obsessives are a bit worrying.”

Wow. Good post indeed!! I agree with everything you've said. Not just the reality shows, one or two soaps too, I said something about one soap not long after I joined, bearing in mind I've read ds for years now..they accused me of being another person . And demanded that I stop watching !!

Also worrying on here is the way people idolise television programmes as if they are the only things in their lives. Fair does, someone mentioning their favourite show or remembering their favourite moment on a particular show seems OK, but people who seem to spend their lives yapping on about who came last in Big Brother 13 years ago is a bit odd to say the least as 99.9 per cent of people probably wouldn't remember. This kind of weirdness is a bit unsettling, particularly when it boiled over into Channel 4 execs being sent death threats when they decided to cancel BB, possibly the same obsessives who spend their life in a forum discussing a worn out show little more than a million people watch.
OK don't think I'm singling out Big Brother, although it does have a rather obsessive extreme fan base, as other shows like The X Factor and TOWIE, both shows whose cancellation would mean nothing to most people, seem to have developed this obsessive following. I know you used to get people who thought soap characters were real( possibly still do), but at least someone like Ken Barlow is far more recognisable than Joe Bloggs who was booted out of The X Factor's first series in the second week.”

This post is nothing but a thinly-veiled attack against BB fans. Why do you assume that people who discuss past series of BB have no lives? It would be like me saying people that discuss ratings everyday and pretend they are channel executives have no lives. Not so accurate, right? This thread and the people that post in it are no different from the people that post in the BB forum - same weirdness, same obsessiveness. BB fans are no different from soap fans, DW fans, football fans, etc. Fan = fanatic. Of course a forum dedicated to Big Brother could have a thread about "who came last in Big Brother 13 years ago." I lurk this thread often and have seen people discussing Christmas day ratings from 1986 - something that "99.9 per cent of people probably wouldn't remember." I felt the need to say this because there is this odd hostility towards BB fans...

Back on the ratings front, the ratings for last night's BB were dire and I have a feeling this will be the lowest rated BB yet. I think next year they will do an all-stars series in order to pick up some past viewers.

Some good ratings over the weekend - sorry just catching up after Saturday night in Manchester.

BGT doing exceptionally well for ITV and Ninja Warrior possibly their most successful new LE format in years.

Casualty holding up well considering it is nearly 30 years old - although it could do with a slightly shorter run. A shame that Atlantis has gone as I have heard lots of good things about the second series.

I really enjoyed Jonathan Strange last night, although it doesn't feel like a Sunday 9pm show. Saying that though, I'm not too sure where else it could go. I would say mid 4's for it which would be a shame, but I do hope that I am proven wrong and it is a bit higher.

It does, but maybe not as much as it used to. Some of its British imports still do good business.

It's a huge shame, and yet again I guarantee that the +1 won't be revealed. Usually Sundays +1 are bigger than other days.

4.5m for Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell.
Dancc

4.5m for Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, beaten by ITV's Home Fires on 4.8m. BBC One's best rated programme in peak was Countryfile, pulling in 6.27m (33.1%).

Channel 4 meanwhile had a very quiet evening. For The Love of Cars held 1.03m (4.8%) at 8pm, followed by Grayson Perry's Dream House which was last in the 9pm slot with 0.87m (3.9%).

We should get the +1 figure today as DS use a different reporter for ratings on weekdays and he's normally pretty good with the detail.

I wouldn't expect it to add much though.

Thanks Dancc.

Grayson Perry never rates well. Trends on Twitter and wins awards but is usually around 1m. Does the Home Fires rating include HD and +1? Good to see it holding up. Decent start for Norrell but I'm not sure if it will stay around that level.

I think so. I got those two from Twitter as JS&MN was outside BBC One's top 3.

ITV2's screening of 21 Jump Street was also popular last night, averaging 0.55m (3.1%).

Home Fires held up well but Norrell definitely dented it. Will Norrell hold up next week? 21 Jump Street jumped to another network pretty quickly. Th st was on Channel 5 last year.
