Utterly baffled by that rating though, I must admit. It was a pretty ordinary episode I thought, if anything one of the worst they've put out in the past couple of weeks.”

Yep that's what I meant. Non launch high. A very normal episode. Odd. Thought the first half was good, middle was dull but last 5 mins was cringe/embarrassingly entertaining.

It was brilliant - whimsical, quirky and the cast didn't put a foot wrong throughout. I'm sure it'll end up being perceived as a classic via international and DVD sales.

Wonderfully weird #JonathanStrangeAndMrNorrell bowed out on BBC1 with disappointing 1.7m/7.6% @CubaPictures http://www.overnights.tv

Ouch!”

Hopefully now the BBC will learn that this is more of a BBC4 drama, and the public hates toff crap.

All I can think of is maybe people thought the From Hell week started yesterday?

It still looks odd for it to be that high at 10pm in particular. It's the sort of +1 boost I'd expect for an episode that created a lot of social media buzz, but this one didn't.

Also on C5: 1.23m tuned in for the latest screening of Dirty Dancing. This one always repeats well but opposite blokey Top Gear, this was perfect counter scheduling.

Black Work got 5.6m including +1. Very good rating, especially as Surprise Surprise struggled with only 3 million at 8pm. By the looks of the ratings Dancc posted Catchphrase did even worse. Wonder what's going on there?

For Catchphrase, some will say and you are willing to choose from

(a) it starts off junction with other channels

(b) it's a 30 minute show that has been extended and padded too much

(c) it's sunny weather outside and it was on too early

(d) it's just not that good

(e) They confused viewers by airing a repeat in the slot directly prior to the new series starting.

(f) LIONEL RICHIE WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE !!! (should really be reason a)

DD is always a good rater. They could do it once a week and still get over a million!

Agreed about the male/female scheduling. However as someone (a bloke like myself) who watches BB and Top Gear (and secretly like DD) all the conflicting male female scheduling catches me out.

I'm such a wide variety genre viewer!

f) People just don't like Mulhern

Dismal ratings for Catchphrase. OK, so it has to single-handedly kickstart the Sunday night line-up during hot weather, but if people like a show, they find a way to watch it.

Final series for this revival, I reckon.

It was written by the guy who wrote the Doctor Who story 'Kill the Moon' was it not, by the looks of it i'm not surprised it tanked on BBC1. :/

As you say. it's got Sunday 10pm BBC4 written all over it.

It was adapted by Peter Harness..

...and it was superb. But not for it's slot.

TV has catered for the slobby, chavvy, council estate demographic for too long. Time to redress the balance and make a bit of culture for cultured people. Toffs, if you like (how are the 1920s working our for you, by the way?)

I don't like where this is going.

Come on guys, let's keep it friendly in here.

Using the DS report, ITV's all-inclusive ratings and shares were:

Catchphrase: 2.28m (12.0%)
Surprise, Surprise: 3.03m (13.4%)
Black Work: 5.55m (24.5%)

An -11% slippage for Black Work, not too shabby. More viewers around in the 9pm hour though, so share was down -14%. Interesting to see how the first episode consolidated later this lunchtime: could it get to 8m inc +1?

Discovery secure exclusive Europe-wide rights to the Olympics, for Eurosport:

http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/29/medi...ympics-europe/

Quote:
“"Consistent with IOC and local market requirements, Discovery has committed to broadcast a minimum of 200 hours of the Olympic Games and 100 hours of the Olympic Winter Games on free-to-air television during the Games period," a press release stated. "Discovery will sub-license a portion of the rights in many markets across Europe."”

Remains to be seen what this means for the UK market specifically, as my understanding is it's a protected event and the whole lot has to be shown live on FTA, not just some of it.

It means Discovery will do it free to air like BT Sport will do with some of The Champions League. That's what I think from reading it. Plus they will sell some back to European broadcasters. This is going to get very complicated.

I'll let mlt11, Steve Williams and Dancc explain it once they've looked over everything. That's because I'm lazy!

I wouldn't be surprised if Discovery sells the 2024 rights to the BBC although I imagine ITV would be interested in getting it but it does depend on where the 2024 Olympics are being held.

What's the betting that the FTA protected list will be dismantled just in time to award exclusive rights to a pay TV business...?

i'd say it's high, probably very high, what with a Tory Government for at least the next 2 terms and newspapers pushing Whittingdale to cut the BBC back down to size...

Sad times for FTA sport.

mlt11 and Steve Williams even. My head's wrecked already thinking about it.

2022 is so far away, the possibilities are endless. The protected events list could be scrapped or altered. Channel 4 could well be privatised. Channel 5 could change hands again. Who knows what Auntie will look like ?

Emaciated.

So this means the BBC has it up to 2020 but after that its Discovery who could sell it back to other broadcasters?

This is pretty big isn't it?

I think even Labour forget it and won't want to be reminded of it.

It's very big news. Makes you wonder about the Euros and World Cup on free to air TV.
