That's a pretty modest figure for the Anniversary Games. It's absolutely heaving in Stratford (London) this weekend, wiith people attending the Games

Another good rating for Emmerdale last night. It's done exceptionally well this week with some huge y-o-y gains. Every episode is UP versus a year ago - and they didn't even have to rely on any promotional push. Just good stories and good writing.

Mon: up 0.7m
Tue: up 0.9m
Wed: up 0.5m
Thu 7.00: up 1.2m
Thu 8.00: up 1.0m
Fri: up 1.2m

The whole week averaged 5.7m versus the 4.8m it averaged in 2014 for the equivalent week. I can see it pulling ahead of EE once it's big week arrives (w/c 3rd August).

Significant news for ratings. Well done CD93 for spotting this one.

The first ratings for online TV viewing.

No surprise Married At First Sight is returning. It did well for Channel 4. Bet they give it a longer series.

Has there been any more news regarding the strictly launch? With Doctor who starting on September 19th, I think this is when we'll see the first live show, which means if they stick with the three week gap between the launch and the first show, it'll launch on the bank holiday weekend.

I think it's a decent figure for BBC2. I wasn't expecting more than 3m for the Anniversary Games on BBC2.

I think Emmerdale's performance this past week has proved the soaps aren't dead.

Not that I've seen, but the rumour mill should hot up in the next few weeks.

Would be foolish of the bbc not too start both scd and who on the same weekend, would kick start autumn with a bang.

When soaps have good storylines people will watch them. A guaranteed 5/6/7 million on a good day. Still think they're on too often though.

And why can't EastEnders sustain a boost?

Thank goodness, those nasty, negative posts have been removed. It was mudslinging and cat calling that had nothing to do with ratings.
Now then, had this thread been around in the second half of the seventies, the biggest attraction on a Saturday night, outside of the World Cup, was BBC1's Seaside Special. This variety show produced at a different holiday resort each week( later series had shows from Belgium and France), which featured MOR singers, family entertainers, a beauty contest and Radio 1 DJs as hosts, regularly attracted 18 million viewers. While probably extremely outdated now and regarded as sexist for having a beauty contest, I do remember gathering with my family to watch SS.

Interesting World Cup draw from a footballing and broadcasting perspective as England and Scotland are pitted in the same qualifying group but who will broadcast the ties? ITV hold the contract for England games and Sky for Scotland matches. Will it be a case of ITV airing both alongside Sky but STV not allowed to get in on the action or will it be more complicated than that?

EDIT: Someone on the broadcasting forum said it would be:
Scotland v England - Sky and ITV excluding STV
England v Scotland - ITV and STV excluding Sky

If that's the case ITV will be very happy with the outcome.

Yes Iv seen pretty negative opinions about Seaside Special in hindsight (and like formats of the period), but I loved it as a kid.

Looking at the guest lists its like a who's who of variety, every frame soaked in the seventies when British resorts were still largely first choice for many:

Does ITV's England deal mean they get the first choice of England matches in the World Cup group stages? I don't think Sky can show World Cup games.

England v Scotland will be a big match. Can't wait!

I cant imagine they get that particular right when it gets to the finals but they usually get two of Englands group games anyway by dint of negotiation.

I think ITV get first choice for the tournaments proper; they tend to plump for England group matches as they're guaranteed a good audience. So for 2014 it would have presumably been:

First choice: Uruguay v England (ITV)
Second choice: First knockout round match or Italy v England (BBC One)
Third choice: England v Costa Rica (ITV)
Fourth choice: Italy v England or First knockout round match (BBC One)

I assume BBC One picked the first knockout round match first safe in the knowledge they would have an England match as fourth pick. ITV steered clear of the Italy game due to the late kick off time.

I'm sure they still use the coin toss. They used it last time I believe to decide matches at the Euros.

I'd agree. I think 2.5m over two hours is pretty strong, actually. The World Championships at the end of next month is in Beijing, so no real opportunities for big ratings again as everything will air in the afternoon.

Excellent figure for Celebrity Masterchef last night - a sterling performance for this time of year.
