Why are people obsessing over the 'biggest stunt' line, it's obvious tabloid talk ramping up expectations.

They are hardly going to say '7th biggest stunt' are they!

Sky Sports have retained La Liga rights for the next 3 seasons so the reports about BT gaining them were untrue.

New Tricks series 12 launches with 5.37m (25.5%). Maintaining the sharp downward trend that came into effect last series. It did gain a slightly higher share than last year suggesting that the move to Tuesday is the primary reason for the drop this time. It doesn't look likely any episodes will be troubling the 6millions this year although it did manage to continue its old tradition of out-rating Eastenders. Last night's episode was good and it's a 2-parter, so it should provide some "good feeling" going forward. Here's an interesting stat - in its hayday a repeat of New Tricks on 17/9/09 at 9pm gained overnights of 5.5m (25%), higher than last night's launch rating.

New Tricks series premiere overnight ratings
pilot (Thursday 27/3/03) - 6.3m (27%)
series 1 (Thursday 1/4/04 - 6.9m (33%)
series 2 (Monday 9/5/05) - 7.5m (~33%)
series 3 (Monday 17/4/06) 7.2m (28%)
series 4 (Monday 9/4/07) - 7m (33%)
series 5 (Monday 7/7/08) - 8.7m (37%)
series 6 (Thursday 16/7/09) - 8.07m (34.2%)
series 7 (Friday 10/9/10) - 7.11m (30.7%)
series 8 (Monday 4/7/11) - 8.25m (35.0%)
series 9 (Monday 27/8/12) - 7.77m (31.6%)
series 10 (Tuesday 30/7/13) - 7.52m (33.5%)
series 11 (Monday 18/8/14) - 5.79m (25.0%)
series 12 (Tuesday (4/8/15) - 5.37m (25.5%)

Mon... Sherlock repeats, (I actually really want to watch this series again)
Tue... New tricks
Wed... Nature after bake off(???)
Thur... Who do you think you are
Fri.. Ripper street

BBC1 have had several totally unappealing offerings this year. Can we blame it on Charlotte Moore? It does seem to me that since her appointment BBC1 seems to have transferred into an upmarket Channel 5. That isn't a criticism of Channel 5 by the way, but merely an observation that the type of shows BBC1 have been showing of late could be quite happily sat on Channel 5.

I can't recall a summer as lacklustre as this one for my whole life - I'm starting to miss non-stop Commonwealth Games coverage!

Saturday nights for example, whilst Steve Williams demonstrated that summer Saturdays have always been dull, the year that Miss Marple aired on Saturdays was the four August Saturdays following the Olympics 1992 to take us to September.
So, there have been reasons for lacklustre schedules, but now lacklustre seems to be the order of the day.

I am reassured somewhat by ITV's forthcoming offerings - it seems that potentially they could have a brilliant Autumn and along with the Rugby World Cup, I can't see BBC1 doing very well in the months leading up to Christmas. What have BBC1 actually got lined up apart from Strictly, The Apprentice and Doctor Who?
I think you are being a little unfair there. Of course the main channels dont try too hard in summer but there have been some decent stuff on not least a good smattering of new drama (even ITV had new drama on). I think it may look a bit worse because last year a lot of slots were taken up with sport which have had to be filled this year.

ITV should have a better autumn mainly because its a Doc Martin year plus there seems to be a little more drama as well, but its pretty much the same line up as always and if your not a reality fan its a lot less attractive.

As for what the BBC are showing we really dont know. We have New Tricks/ Ripper Street/Bake Off to run for a couple of months yet and the Sat/Sun should be as usual. I cant see them challenging DA /DM with much though. We know Cuffs will air (everyone seems to assume Wednesdays) and the 3 part And Then There Were None is supposed to air this year but maybe the Xmas 3 parter.
Pure speculation based on a couple of mentions I have seen Dr Foster and the 3rd series of Shetland are possibilities and there are a number of one off drams but which are ready I dont know.
There are a few comedies for BBC1 which should make us all shudder but the best sounding is the BBC2 8 parter Cradle to the Grave with Peter Kaye and written by Jeff Pope/Danny Baker.

New Tricks is down on the highs that it used to get, but it's figure last night is still very good. Some new drama launches would love a figure like that.

I guess we have an added interest on this thread for Cuffs, as H had the pleasure of working behind the scenes on the show.

Cradle to the Grave does sound like something interesting to keep an eye out for.

I except the BBC will raise a white flag against Downton in the autumn with the final series rolling out on the autumn Sundays. However the Christmas special could face some serious competition. Yes I know, I will not speak of the C word again.

Well it will rate higher than Emmerdale, I suspect it will be the most watched show of the day. I am going for 7.8 million?

Figures appear to be up this summer, so Bake Off could launch with 8 million.

I believe it was mid 7's for it's launch last year with that monster final rating of 12 million at the end of the series.

Downton is not the Juggernaut it once was, hopefully we will get a good alternative for none Downton Fans, is that not the job of Aunty?

I think around 7m is likely as a minimum for Bake Off tonight. Weather isn't great so that could help. Arguably the first big programme launch of the almost Autumn season?

The BBC should provide an alternative, but we will probably find factual up against it, albeit quality factual. That is of course assuming that they haven't discovered that one of their drama commissions is not particularly good, and throw it away.

BBC and ITV are lacking in the light hearted , humorous programmes such as New Tricks.

Six or seven years ago on BBC you had Hustle, Hotel Babylon and New Tricks. With the end of New Tricks have we seen the end of comedy drama ? On ITV all that is left of this genre is Doc Martin.

With regards to the viewing figure now in 2015 5 million live viewers is high. I didn't watch New Tricks straight away as I caught up with it a few hours later on the BBC I player app on my smart TV.
New Tricks is on the top 5 most watched programmes on Iplayer.

I do think that New Tricks has been axed slightly soon as there is obviously nothing to replace it during the summer months whilst Silent Witness is still going 19 years on with a completely different main cast member almost every year.

I have a feeling we could be in for a huge one, the promotion/hype is there, I wouldn't be ruling out 9m+, especially off the back of that final rating last year- I don't think it's stopped growing yet either....

I think New Tricks lost some of its ratings power last year when Cilla overtook it. I think that wouldn't have happened had the original team still been in place. I think some TV bosses underestimate the pull of light-hearted dramas, they are certainly needed on BBC1 and ITV.

Personally I consider Death In Paradise to be the New Tricks light crime drama successor. It gets overnight ratings like New Tricks did two years ago and is a far bigger timeshfter.

That annoying boring abbey rubbish needs some completion against it. Channel 5 or Channel 4 anyone?

It's possible but I think high 7m/low 8m is more likely.

This is why I thought a 9m launch for Bake Off would be difficult. It usually builds across the series and last year no overnight rating cleared 9m.

But looking at the weather and the buzz for it, it could be close.

Can not wait for Bake Off tonight! And hopefully a whopping big rating! Could 10 million be possible for its opening rating? I think it's possible it could touch that rating, but I think more likely 9m - 9.5m.
