Safe House could provide safe haven for ITV in terms of ratings but will it deliver? Chefs are being put under pressure - both by Greg Wallace/John Torode and by Alex Polizzi but what kind of audience will they pull in? Ballot Monkeys is another show trying a satirical (presumably) look at the world but will it work? Could Plus Sized Wars result in Plus Size viewers? Could The Impossible do impossibly well for Channel 4?

3 a.m. might be a good slot - isn't that when the human body is at its lowest ebb and many people die ?

According to The Mirror, ITV soap bosses planning an Emmerdale cast cull in a bid to boost ratings.

Emmerdale usually do their stunts very well, so I can see this providing a temporary ratings boost at least.

Just what the soaps need another fire/car crash - boring.

In terms of being a broadcaster they need a cull behind the scenes rather than on one of their shows (well, maybe Coronation Street ). In terms of being a business they're doing enough though.

Dancc mentioned Celebrity Squares presumably being promoted during Britain's Got Talent on Saturday but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. I see to remember Vera, Safe House and Newzoids being but definitely not Celebrity Squares. Awful figure for it and Vera is pretty robust to pick up an audience from nothing which, all the same, proves it can be done.

BBC One had another strong evening and they have a very strong schedule with Countryfile opening the night excellently. Poldark finished well, Indian Summers not as well and I wonder if it will get the 9pm slot on it's return. Channel 4 had a reasonable night otherwise while BBC Two and Channel 5 both grew as the evening went on.

I'm not sure she is, she was very popular on Five Live. I just think her show is the wrong time of day on the news channel and doesn't bring anything to BBC2 either.

A first time for everything in the Ratings Thread. Newsreader critcised for being too serious is bang up there in terms of ludicrousness.

Next you'll be saying kids programme Thunderbirds is too childish ! Oh wait...

I see today that Channel 4's Head of Entertainment has "moved on". That role seems to be so narrow and there are remarkably few commissions considering they have as many Com Eds for entertainment as ITV do. Plus you've got the Fact Ent commissioners who cover a remit that extends as far as The Jump. Then "Formats and Music" which nobody really understands also seems to sit on that turf.

I guess they decided to give it a second run as the first was up against Bake Off but even there it had a Corrie lead-in. While I can understand ITV having some bother with entertainment in this slot while Strictly is on, they shouldn't be struggling this much against Countryfile.

Having said that, with Squares doing so badly I wouldn't be surprised to see them move it back to 6.15pm with Catchphrase back earlier than planned at 7pm.

Does anyone know how the teatime Ninja Warrior repeat did? I'm curious to see if it beat Celebrity Squares. ”

Strange when I keep reading posts on this thread as to how brilliant ED currently is.

Simon does what he suppose to do on the news channel, Be the presenter for the rolling news as they come in.

Fair enough. Bad assumption on my part. I forgot logic and ad placement do not necessarily go together in TV land.

Thank you. More than three times the BBC Two audience in that slot then at the moment and I expect Channel 4 is still quite a way behind as well.

TWS is such a reliable performer. Good to see Madeley back in the chair this week as well.

I think the trailers during the breaks of Britain's Got Talent probably show which programmes are valued by ITV. To be honest, for all the 'promotion' from Wednesday to Sunday Celebrity Squares was against strong opposition which had a headstart, had a much weaker lead in and, unless it was pushed during Code of a Killer/Emmerdale/Coronation Street/Vera, had barely any promotion of note. It was hardly popular to start with!

Frankly if ITV thinks Celeb Sqaures will be able to get much of an audience starting 15minutes into CF then they are surely deluded. Celeb Squares did poorly 1st time around and now they give it an even worse start time.

And again, ITV seem insistent on having at least 1 flop in the schedule.

What's the betting next year ITV give Beowulf a YBF lead in.

Britain's Got Talent consolidated to 11.29m inc+1

Vera 6.2m

Code of a Killer 6.56m

It is and that article is nothing more than speculation based on ED bosses saying they've got a big summer planned. ED usually does stunts better than the other soaps anyway. Just look at the siege and even the boat showdown with Charity was a better stunt than Corrie has produced anytime since the tram crash. ED consistently portrays issue led storylines really well too. Just recently they've covered sexual assault, alcoholism, HIV, and cancer.

Also I think it's become abundantly clear that ITV are concerned about the ratings for both soaps as ED has now got a trailer. It seems we're getting trailers a lot more often recently.

Is that the highest rating so far this year, or did EE do better?

It's funny because the way people have talked on here I thought Coronation Street was in need of lots of work? Ian Hyland thinks so. But nothing happens as ratings are higher than EastEnders.

I've worked it out to be 10.63m (inc +1: 11.25m) for BGT episode 1 consolidated rating.

Add together the ITV2 repeats and it comes to a huge 12.51m.

Thanks. Not a million miles behind Squares but for the slot I suspect the audience share was pretty poor.

Good consolidated number for BGT, although I wonder to what extent its consolidated number has been damaged by BARB attributing time shift viewers to the Sunday repeat rather than the original screening.
