I know, I was being whimsical. Thought someone might like to suggest BBC1 were deliberately doing it on a Friday to mess up Corrie.

Lots of things! Different presenters, different concepts, different slots, different competition, different times of the year. They're clearly not the same programme and there must be something about Secret Britain that's more appealing to the audience. It's the same argument as saying Traffic Cops does well on BBC1 while the ITV shows about police videos don't, therefore BBC1 must have a default audience - but that's wrong because my dad tells me he likes Traffic Cops better. I don't know why, presumably they have more interesting videos and more interesting stories, but he likes it better. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that The Wonder of Britain was boring and badly made, and Secret Britain is more interesting. Plus Secret Britain has crap competition (not the Beeb's fault).
What made Pop Idol do so much better than Fame Academy? They were the same concept, but Pop Idol was the better show by miles. It's that simple.

Fair enough, although I think that's a pretty daft way to do it, especially at the weekend, like the other Saturday when C4 only had Independence Day listed and not the Grand National. Presumably in a couple of weeks we'll have a Saturday when the Cup Final isn't given but a bog standard episode of Casualty is. And we're paying for it!

@ThatTimWalker ...on bbc news than bbc2 'cos of the schedule disruption.”
This is a daft story, I don't know how many people they expect to watch it on BBC2, as Compton says, when it hasn't been on BBC2 the previous three days and isn't on the following day. Who's going to remember it's on BBC2 that day and that day alone? Even loyal viewers will have forgotten and watched it on BBC News. It's like the Sunday episode of Breakfast, everyone's got used to watching that on BBC News so on the few occasions during the football season when it's on BBC1 I doubt the ratings do much because nobody's expecting it to be there.
Of course, the argument is that they should have taken if off BBC2 all week, or indeed not launched it until after the snooker. But the thing is, despite it being quite a big deal for BBC News, it's hardly a priority for BBC2 and is really just there to make it look a bit better than just simulcasting three hours of normal BBC News. Given in recent months BBC2 daytime has included a load of signed repeats, F1 practice that used to be on the red button alone and indeed a CBBC simulcast the other month, it's clear much of the stuff on there is just to avoid a blank screen.
