So this TV does have an HD tuner, Samsung should update their website and there should be some indication on the box or a sticker on the TV stating this.
The difference in picture quality between HD and SD is immense.
I'm very happy now!
Thanks for all the replies.”
Sometimes if the aerial cable is wrapped up with other cables, such as HDMI leads it can pick up unwanted interference so untangling it or simply moving it away from other cables can often be beneficial.
Mind you still doesn't help that Samsung are saying it's not Freeview HD when it looks like it may be.

The next to useless pile of doggy do do that is the E-Manual downloadable from the Samsung website is not exactly a paragon of clarity on the topic. It does imply that Bluetooth headphones can be paired with the telly. But it does seem to suggest that only Samsung SoundShare compatible devices can be used.

Just about any USB hard drive should be usable. The only problem might be powering the drive from the USB port so might be worth considering a self powered device.
Also the TV might well format the drive and encrypt it so that it can only be used with that specific TV, not even with another one of the same model. It is very common that TVs encrypt their recordings which can be a real pain if your TV dies and there are a load of recordings you want to watch. Once the telly dies the recordings left behind are unusable.
