Problem With 4OD
Paperhouse
30-03-2015
On 4OD I've watched 5 of the 6 episodes of Lipstick on your Collar on my Smart TV; but the 6th and last episode just won't play. Pictures seems OK but the sound track sounds like a skipping CD. Is there a problem with it or is it me?

Since the episode can be watched perfectly on an iPad using the same internet connection, it suggests to me that the fault lies with the TV (which is less than two weeks old).

As the TV and ipad will use different servers it doesn't mean very much.

Don't really understand this stuff I'm afraid. Does Panasonic provide the server for the TV?

I've now downloaded Snagfilms from the AppStore on the TV; but the TV will not play anything from it. Picture seems to be speeded up and audio sounds like a skipping CD.

Probably. 4OD has changed today to All4 which may be related.

Couldn't play this particular episode yesterday though.

In trying to resolve the problem I contacted Channel 4. Their response was:-

Unfortunately we are not yet able to support Panasonic TVs unless they have an accompanying set top box.

So they cannot help because it's a Smart TV?

Episode has the same issue on my 2015 Panasonic Freetime TV. Tried on Humax HDR1000S the same problem. Looks like a duff file on the freesat server.

If you can be bothered you can tell CH4 a settop box is also affected. If you had told them it was a Freetime On Demand service they might have talked to Freesat.

Might as well. Good idea.

Went back to Ch4 and told them it was a problem with a set top box and they later claimed to have fixed it. Now the episode plays correctly until the first commercial break and then freezes.

I also have a 2015 Panasonic Viera Smart TV and since All 4 was released not one Channel 4 related programme continues after the first ad break.

I've emailed the All 4 technical team to let them know.

Finally gave up with All-4 and found it on You Tube to watch without adverts!

Noticed that some Freesat channels were unavailable yesterday and had to rescan. Does Freesat not update automatically like a Sky box?

Updates should be automatic. Which freesat box do you have ? A Foxsat-hdr needs to be in sby overnight to update. Freetime boxes update when on automatically.

Panasonic Smart TV with built-in Freesat - no separate Freesat box.

I wonder if problem lies with Panasonic interface more then All4 e.g. I often get same problem on my android phone, but PC normally works every time.

Onus is probably on TV manufacturers to bring out (or at least pressurise Channel 4 to make) updates - All4 can obviously test their new version with as many interfaces as possible, but they will not be able to check every combination of hardware and 3rd party interface software (any more than Microsoft can do with Windows updates).

You probably need to email Panasonic too (if you can find out who to email). Panasonic will have more clout than you as a single individual.

In many respects, this is why I would not but a Smart TV - I prefer to have a Dumb TV, and use external device which is well supported as the "Brains". Of course getting a Dumb TV is getting harder but so long as Smart TVs have an HDMI inlet port, this should not be a big issue.

Just checked, my Panasonic AS800 series freetime TV has updated automatically.

Couldn't find an 'automatic' option in the tuning options on mine.

There isn't an auto option. It's part of the freesat and freetime specs. It should update all by itself.

Strange that it didn't; or was it because the TV was in use (i.e. Not in standby mode) on, or around midnight when the update might have been happening?

Not sure how the TV handles Freesat updates, I rarely use it's built in tuners. The update isn't put on air overnight, it just that some boxes check for updates overnight and others make the changes almost immediately. All I can tell you my TV was on during the day of the updates, completely powered off overnight. and that the update had taken place at sometime (not overnight), when I checked today. It can be hard to spot a transponder change as often the same channel continues on the original transponder for a day or two so unless your receiver has a way of identifying the transponder in use you can't tell (The Foxsat can display the transponder data).

I will try and remember to post a heads up for the next change. My Foxsat e-mails changes after overnight updates so I get to know what has changed the following day, unless someone spots the change on the actual day and posts here.

Panasonic claim that both the non-update of channels and problems associated with watching All-4 are down to a problem with Freetime. Would this also be the cause of 5 On Demand freezing?

Possibly I believe the servers belong to Freesat.
