I never thought EC was that great, just a competent blues guitarist who was around in the right place at the right time . Many guitarists were better and more versatile than EC at the time (late 60s), not least Brit guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson who was with Fairport at the time but was barely known and got little publicity then.
