Joni is currently in intensive care in an LA area hospital but is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them.

I'm probably over-reacting here but, on the BBC website when they reported this, it stated something like 'Joni Mitchell - Mostly known for her 1970 hit Big Yellow Taxi'

Mostly known for one song??? what about 'Joni Mitchell - mostly known for being one of the best singer/songwriters of all time' certainly, along with the likes of Carole King probably one the most celeberated female artists ever!

I felt the same way. She has so many beautiful songs. I absolutely adore her music. I hope she is well again very soon.

That's probably true though for the average Joe public who anyway would have to be over a certain age to remember that song. I suspect (sadly) that most people under 40 probably have no idea who Joni Mitchell is, or care. Just look at the very few posts there are here at this stage.

I'm 28 and have been a huge fan of her music since childhood. I heard one of her songs in a film and ever since then I've been hooked

Well, there's been very little news for us to comment on other than that she was taken to hospital. Hopefully she will make a good recovery. Also it's only 9am in LA so a bit early for any developments to be reported.

She is without question a fantastic songwriter but maybe not as mainstream as some others of her generation.

Well, that's good, but I expect you may be in a small minority for your generation. Still, she is one discovery that has touched many lives all over the world.

Here's how she looked and sounded live in her early days before she really became famous - from 1968. You could tell then that something pretty extraordinary was stirring.

I'm 31 and I love Joni. I am annoyed that not many on Digital Spy seem to care for her going by the replies to this thread and the one in showbiz. If it were Cheryl for example in this position there would be an absolute frenzy. Joni is a true music great and it's sad to think younger people don't even realise her impact on some of the artists they like.

Perhaps it is because she just stands and sings!

As opposed to prancing around in skimpy clothes with troop of half-naked male dancers, flashing lights, autotune, and anything else to disguise a pretty but mediocre singer

Women like Joni, Dusty, Janis, Aretha and thousands more of that era, had fabulous voices that required no false embellisment

I thought exactly the same, Big Yellow Taxi would be way down the list whenever I think of Joni Mitchell. It was a great song but she had so many greater ones that spring to mind first.
I hope she makes a full recovery, brilliant singer/songwriter who I adored in late 60's-70's.

I never single Joni out for her songs. It's her albums that define her, but to average music listeners, I can see why that is often regarded as perhaps her most memorable hit.

I love Joni. I got into her a few years ago. Her album Blue is one of my all time favs. She's the type of artist I listen to if i am having a restless night and want something to delve into another world too.

I guess they singled Big Yellow Taxi out because it's Joni's only hit single in the UK. I don't care for the song, it's good, but there are far better songs in her catalogue. She has never been a singles artist. Even during her peak period she only scored one top 10 hit in the US. She has always been an albums artist. She is one of the most influential and important figures in music. I don't think any other female artist has ever come close to matching the run of albums that Joni released from her 1968 to 1976. Thankfully she seems to be on the mend.

Maybe I'm being very slow here, but I literally only just found out (via Wikipedia) is that the "Big Yellow Taxi" is a Toronto Police car.

I never realised the song was about her "old man" being arrested.

Eh? I think the clue is in the word 'taxi' which afaik means what it says. I always assumed that line refers to her figuratively meaning her partner walked out on her.

There are lots of references online to the Big Yellow Taxi being a Toronto Police car, e.g. https://losttoronto2.wordpress.com/2...g-yellow-taxi/

It's certainly possible that this interpretation of the lyric is not what she intended but it wouldn't be unusual for a songwriter to use a phrase like "big yellow taxi" to represent something that isn't literally a big yellow taxi. Apparently Toronto taxis weren't yellow - presumably to avoid being confused with police cars.

“David Crosby has shared Joni Mitchell's condition, saying that she is recovering after suffering from a brain aneurysm but is still unable to speak.

"I have not spoken to her. To my knowledge, she is not speaking yet," he said. "She is home, she is in care, she is recovering. How that's going to go, we don't know yet.

"She took a terrible hit. She had an aneurysm, and nobody found her for a while. And she's going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury."

Crosby said he was hopeful of Mitchell making a full recovery, adding that everybody is "holding [their] breath".”

Best wishes to Joni for a speedy recovery.

Her output is far too diverse to have just one favourite, but this one always moves me.

Her body of work is incredible. At least we've had some news on her condition. I hope she makes a full recovery.
