I have a new phone for my aunt - the Ericsson GH628. I got this when I worked at Dixons but it never came with the charger - or anything - just the phone.

But looking online I am not sure what fitting charger it needs. If anyone could advise it would be appreciated. My aunt (in her late 70's) lives in a remote country cottage miles from anywhere and in turn she is sole carer for her over 100 year old mum. A mobile phone is very important to her and I really want to help get her sorted.

She is currently using the Ericsson PH337 at the moment but the display on that model is quite tiny and she is struggling to see it. The GH628 will be just right for her if I can get it working!

As I'm sure you know the GH628 is pretty old - indeed coming from 1996 it is probably before some of our readers were born! But the charger model was the ericsson pl-41 as far as I can tell, but good luck finding one.

The 628 used the old Ericsson charger, like the original flip Ericsson phones.

They also have very similar screens so there wouldn't be any real improvement.

I doubt the battery would charge. Additionally, the phone will expect a 5v SIM and I'm not sure where one would get one nowadays.

I found the charger on eBay and its all ordered and paid for. Thanks for the help.

As to those wondering why I am asking such a question it took much effort to instruct my aunt to use the PH337. I want to give her something essentially the same or she just wont use it and it will end up in the drawer. I told her to go to the local phone shop to try out some new ones for herself but nothing came of that. I do my best but she is hard work and nearly 200 miles away so options are limited.

An update. The charger does not charge the phone at all - the battery has absolutely had it. No point in ordering a new one as they are likely to be old also so taking my Minicraft cutter I cut around the battery case to reveal 4 tagged NiMh cells. I have ordered 4 replacements and will solder them / re-assemble the battery when they arrive. In the meantime I have opened the phone and cleaned the gold contacts.

I received four brand new tagged AA cells from eBay. Over the weekend I carefully cut the battery case open, removed the old leaking cells and soldered the new ones into the same shape. I then fitted it into the case and using my soldering iron, carefully 'welded' it closed again. I then fitted it to the phone and tried it. Works perfectly - the charger now charges correctly and the phone display is bright and crisp. All that is left now is to get the SIM and put some credit on it for my aunt.

That'll be a very long way off for some networks, there are too many industrial devices that have 2G only telemetry. I've heard that the smart meters that are slowly rolling out are 2G only too.

AT&T in the US is seriously trying to turn it off but they've had to run a publicity campaign for the last couple of years to get people to replace their telemetry devices with 3G capable ones

(it made a lot of sense to turn off analogue mobile telephony because it was horribly insecure and very inefficient, but GSM is not like that)

Hope everything goes right for you OP after all your hard work but if she has any problems with her new cutting edge phone then may be one of these would suit her better.

Well she was using my old Motorola International 3200 but the weight was too much for her to carry in the end. Fitten up woman, fitten up!

Glad to hear it got working. Still some life in these old phones. I've got an old orange Phillips phone which could probably do with some new cells by now.
