Sheena Easton in the 80's.
I can't comment on any more recent music she may have made, as I haven't heard it but, back in the 80's I thought she was pretty damn good. Her very early stuff like Modern Girl, 9 to 5 and her Bond theme I find quite cheesy and dated now but I think through the rest of the decade she released some really got songs that seem to get completely overlooked. Amongst my favourite singles of hers are: Telefone, Strut, Eternity, The Lover In Me, You Could Have Been With Me, Days Like This, Are You Man Enough, 101 and my fave song, Machinery. It's a shame her career seemed to die a death here just because she decided to move to another country! Anyone else like her?

she did alright for herself with the music stuff and then tv stuff and then property investments so i wouldn't feel so sorry about her career. god knows why prince worked with her so much, but he does make some strange choices. she did do some great songs with him like sugar walls, eternity, 101, cool love, u got the look, lalala he he hee, etc
some of her stuff was recently reissued on cd with a second disc of bonus material of mostly the 12"s |

The point you make about why Prince worked with her so much; wasn't that because he was in a relationship with her during this period.
she did get some great tunes though. the original versions of most of them with prince vocals are circulating amongst fans |

I'm surprised that Strut and Sugar Walls were not hits in the UK, considering they went top 10 in the USA. I don't think they even charted despite the Prince connection. I read somewhere ages ago that her popularity in the UK took a dive when she came back speaking with an American accent a la Joss Stone.

She really only came to the notice of the general public, because she was featured in a TV documentary. I remember the "American accent nonsense" and I believe she could be a right pain in the arse with her demands, when touring. But then, many singers are.
I never thought her anything special. |

no, contrary to what some think, and whilst he has done a fair bit of shagging about, he's not shagged all his protoge's, and he didn't shag her. he was shagging loads of folk in during the years she was releasing prince stuff. she was married too (not that being married would have probably made much difference, but for some reason he's not known to have shagged anyone who was married to someone else)
she did get some great tunes though. the original versions of most of them with prince vocals are circulating amongst fans |

Didn't "Sugar Walls" and the video get banned for being too sexual by certain radio stations/tv networks?

When you mentioned the point that Easton "came back speaking with an American accent", this reminds me of a story I read that she was booed and heckled at a show in Glasgow because of this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parents...Center#Actions it was the second listed track in the filthy 15 which led to parental guidance warnings on albums, with prince at number 1 and his ex girlfriend vanity at number 4. it all kicked off with tippa gore hearing "i sincerely wanna duck the taste out of your mouth" whilst listening to a tape in her daughters walkman, and found that line wasn't included in the lyrics on the 1999 album and with her involvement in the ester rantzen show, which at the time made her seem like a clean cut girl turning dirty due to prince, the more recent stories about her knowledge of jimmy saville make you wonder http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00gl9pn |

some wouldn't play it. the idea of songs/videos being banned is more hype and hearsay than anything else. some stations or shows wouldn't show certain things, but other stations would. due to the publicity that bans would give, they usually played down the idea of a ban to avoid promoting things they don't like

Another decent song she did was The Lover in Me produced and written by Babyface and LA Reid.

Going back to the phoney American accent. Was it only six months she'd been there when she came back with it?

no, tippa borrowed her daughters walkman and it had 1999 in it. she heard the ad lib in let's pretend were married and wasn't sure what she heard so checked the lyrics and it wasn't there. she later heard her daughter playing darling nikki and then called other parents to warn and ask them about the lyrics their kids were listening to
