Oddly enough Season 8 is one of my fave Pertwee Seasons!

I don't really like Season 7 much aside from maybe Inferno but Season 8 has a more cheery feel to it and with the introduction of Jo, Yates and The Master, it feels as if the Unit 'Family' comes together in this Season, it spills across on screen how well they work together. The Daemons is the peak story of this period, it never seems the same after that and for me, UNIT were at their peak in this Season.

However, you can see attempts were made to get away from the strict Earthbound setting of Season 7. The Claws of Axos and Colony In Space I enjoy a lot as we finally get to see Doc 3 inside the TARDIS. It had variety and I liked The first two stories a lot.

However, it doesn't take away from the fact that when watched in order the earthbound nature of the stories does begin to become a bit stale and I'm glad the two aforementioned stories freshen the Season up and the Series itself after nearly two years stuck on Earth.

I also do concede the point the ratings did improve, never argued against that, it's just my personal preference is for stories set out in space.

Actually that's an opinion not a fact.

That's fair enough.

I do find it strange though because I only really see the first 2 Pertwee seasons as truly Earth bound and both those seasons are popular, perhaps Pertwee's most popular.

I know you don't enjoy Season 7 but many (not me) put it as their favourite season of them all. Season 8 is also very strong and one that you seem to prefer.

9 stories in these 2 years and of them I would count 5 of them as amongst Who's best. (Spearhead, Inferno, Terror, Mind of Evil and The Daemons) and another (Claws of Axos) which is a personal favourite.

Season 10 & 11 are not Earthbound and whilst he's still serving his exile in Season 9 he's jaunting about quite a lot. 2 alien planets in Peladon and The Mutants, future Earth in Day of the Daleks and Atlantis in the Time Monster.

Of course me being me prefers The Sea Devils in which he doesn't get any further than the Isle of Wight but as a season it really is quite varied.

I get the feeling that the opinion of the Earthbound stories getting stale and boring is often a revisionist opinion.

I can't speak for others but I do feel the exile scenario is a bit of a marmite format. Some like it, some don't.

I would just clarify that the problem with the early Pertwee Seasons for me is mainly the format and not always the stories. IMO, Season 7 suffers from repetitive settings like industrial units and complexes as well as it's Earthbound setting. Plus the 7-Parters make them rather slow and boring as well at times. Inferno does buck the trend on that last point as it does have a parallel world storyline as well as the TARDIS Console if nothing else.

Season 8 has more variety in settings, it's episodes are shorter and as well as the points made in my previous post, it's what makes it a better Season. The fact it has The Daemons in it is why it just edges Season 10 as my fave Pertwee Season.

On a wider point, it is perfectly acceptable to enjoy stories even when the style and format isn't to your liking. Without detracting from this topic too much, I find recent Series of New Who exactly the same. Don't like the style or the format much but there has been some stand out episodes within those Series. It's the same as if you don't like a certain Doctor as well, you can live with it if the story is good. I find that with Series 1 of New Who.

So yes, it's just the Earthbound setting of every story for the best part of two Seasons I don't enjoy even if the stories are good. I know why the decision was taken to go down that route but it wasn't Doctor Who for me. It's not what the show is about and it went as far removed from it's original concept as it possibly could have done.

IMO off course.

I'm certainly with you on the 7 part story length. Even though I like the premise Ambassadors is a bit of a slog for me and The Silurians goes on a bit as well.

Just something else Letts & Dicks were lumbered with.

BIB it certainly wasn't thought so at the time. Back then, it was felt to be fresh and exciting.

I always thought it funny that Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks made a big thing on DVD commentaries etc. of criticizing the cream UNIT uniforms they inherited, considering them silly, and yet the portrayal of UNIT diminished dramatically over their tenure, culminating in daft escapades like Planet of the Spiders and Robot, which are much sillier representations of UNIT than the likes of The Invasion and Spearhead from Space, complete with Nick Courtney's bouffant hairstyle which is nearly as big as the Doctor's by the end of the Pertwee era. So yes, they put them in proper army uniforms but let everything else slip.

The 3rd Doctor would have essentially been a time/space travelling James Bond from the start, as opposed to just a James Bond.

Liz Shaw would never have been a companion.

The Brigadier would never have become the iconic character he is now.
