Max Ramsey and the Bedsit.
I have recently been re watching neighbours from the beginning.
I have got to the stage where Max moved out of the family home and into the bedsit. I have to say that I really enjoyed this arc and thought it very similar to the boarding house in Sons and Daughters. |

Not thought about the boarding house in Sons & Daughters for years!
![]() Janice, Aunty Fiona and May something or other (the old girl) Wasn't there a revolving wall so May could pop into Fiona's office any time she liked? There was a siege as well. ![]() Think it was towards the end of S&D if I recall. Great old show. |

It was towards the end of the shows run. I loved the addition of Janice.

May Walters.
I was never overly keen on that Boarding House - much preferred the first two, especially the middle one Fiona ran with Irene. I found all the stuff with May, Janice, Neviille, Owen etc was all quite tiresome. Re Max, yes that plot was quite good, it almost became it's own little sitcom spin off for a while. |

The Max story did have a spin off feel to it. Max was one of the great neighbours characters.

It does show how strong a character Max was (and how good an actor Bell) that he was able to carry that time off single handedly. I've been rewatching early Neighbours too by the way. Really upset now i've run out of episodes. I really can't justify the expense of getting the 3rd disc and Charlene Years bought from Australia. They're realy expensive anyway and then import tax. |

It was reported as suicide at the time I think but is now referred to as an accident. Perhaps the inquest recorded an open verdict? It is probably one of those cases where nobody knows for sure.
Either way it is very sad. |

I think it was because of the number of subsidiary characters they needed to introduce that just appeared for a few episodes before disappearing again. Of course that did happen in the 'main' show as well but it was more obvious when they were only interacting with one regular character.

It is incredibly sad that his life was cut short. |

Articles about Francis Bell:
* http://www.nzonscreen.com/person/francis-bell/biography I think the death was recorded as a suicide. The other thing never really reported widely was the real reason for Francis' departure from Neighbours. This page says he abruptly walked off the set http://perfectblend.net/features/where.htm while it was publicly stated at the time that Francis suffered a painful back injury and was on sick leave - referenced here http://perfectblend.net/reference/ar...80/nervous.htm. Later he left permanently, his agent at the time said "His back has been a serious problem and we were unable to reach a suitable financial agreement with Grundys" http://perfectblend.net/reference/ar...80/francis.htm One of the articles mentions Max's clashes with his hoity toity sister Madge. Interesting that once Max left, Madge lost her plummy accent and she herself became the loud working class Aussie who clashed (a little) with the more refined Robinson clan. |

Tom was clearly only ever introduced as a Max replacement and didn't work because of it.
The whole story is quite murky. It seems as though both the bad back and arguing about a pay rise are true. Maybe he finally decided to take sick leave as his back problems were genuine and he thought he'd make a point about being needed so worth the money. But they disagreed so when his contract elapsed whilst he was signed off, they just stopped negotiations. |

Sorry, I know this is slightly off topic but talking about Francis Bell and Sons & Daughters this thread sent me off on a little journey to reminisce. Sadly I found out that Sarah Kemp (Charlie Bartlett in Sons & Daughters) passed away in January. She was 69.

Quite a few of the Sons and Daughters cast have died fairly young. Brian Blain, Michael Long, i'm sure there are a few more. |

Yes did you see that 'where are they now' item about Abigail living in a caravan as a recluse with her husband, hiding behind like a bee keepers hat. Really sad and quitw worrying.

I can't remember all the details but it is on You Tube. From memory, she and her husband's home was destroyed somehow, the local community gave them shelter in a Church but then they refused to leave months later and they were trying to evict them. No money, won't answer the door because of bailiffs, that kind of thing.

Abigail was living in an old church after her home was destroyed by floods. There was a current affairs 'news' story which painted her as a recluse living in the place without permission. However it was a bit of a beat up. A second story showed things in a more balanced way.
The story is briefly mentioned here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abigail_(actress). Here is a you tube clip about the church stay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_nIX3-0UkA; and here's an older one about her weight gain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RfdooI_CA4. Abigail's husband is Adrian Wright who was in Australian soaps like Carson's Law, and in Prisoner as prison nurse turned serial killer Neil Murray. |
