DS Search is your friend. Lots of threads on this in recent years, there you will find your answer. Mostly in the Music board, strangely.

I think in some respects, yes, they were overrated, although they were different compared to what came before, which is why they were so successful.

Agree, music's not bad, how they contributed to a music revolution, excellent.

As individuals some are treated like Gods which tbh I just don't get. Some of the solo stuff was good, others really wasn't any more than ok in my opinion.

Is this one of the most pointlessly asked questions on the internet?

BTW no they weren't the reason this question is still being asked over 50 years since they first released a record, shows people still realise they're rated as the best ever, and they can't handle it..

I was born three years after they disbanded so obviously I don't remember them at all. I've no axe to grind with them but I can't see how bloody brilliant they were, only like a poster above said, they were different as a lot of the 60s stuff at the time was the dirges about kids being killed on bikes and soppy stuff.

The only stuff of theirs I actually like is the White Album and Sgt Pepper.

And I really can't stand smug Macca.

Perhaps its more a question of hearing the music without the mania that surrounding it at the time and wondering why they are still revering the band.

Do I listen to their music a lot? No
Do I like all of their music? No
Do I think that they made an enormous contribution to music and had a special gift that is seldom seen? Yes, without a doubt.

I was born after they disbanded, they created a songbook that still exists unparalleled today, maybe if you didn't have a problem with Macca you'd agree.

So are you honestly saying that the mania from 1963 affects what millions of people born after then think that they're the greatest band ever.

In the end the problem with these arguments, off and on internet, is a portion of each generation say they're over-rated and yet many people from that generation join the bandwagon, hence why they had one of the biggest selling album of "200-10".

As when all these arguments come up I mention I'm not their biggest fan, but to deny their unique place in culture with the weasly epitath of "over-rated" is just poor.

People only use over-rated when they have to admit something is really good, but just want to slate it anyway.

This song the made in 1966 amazes me. It's technically Drum and Bass but the fact that it was made on such basic studio technology is what makes it so great.

The Chemical Brothers in particular built a carrer on this song.

They made a massive contribution to music, no one can deny that. Are there better bands with better song books that aren't held in as high esteem. Yes.

Sums up my feelings. Discovered them properly in the Eighties, and so glad I did.

Albums like Revolver, The White Album, Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper and A Hard Day's Night still make me almost giddy. So I'll forgive them the odd 'Mr Moonlight'.

You don't get to be the most influential and talked about band in the world for nothing.

They were totally gifted.

BIB explains why you can't understand why.

Lennon & McCartney (and Harrison) were songwriters as well as musicians. Though they recorded material written by other artistes, the bulk was written by themselves.

Do One Direction write their own songs?

The Beatles formed 55 years ago. Their music is known worldwide and still regularly played. So no they were not 'overrated' and certainly Lennon, McCartney and Harrison had exceptional musical talent and ability.

Do you think One Direction 'music' will still be playing on radios in 55 years time? I won't be around but i know it won't!

It's not even just Tomorrow Never Knows, although that's one of the more obvious choices. They created a ton of new genres, and influenced the creation of many others.

I'm not an enormous fan of the Beatles, per se, but I can't doubt how incredibly creative they were, and how much they evolved music.

They probably seem overrated now to people who know little about them, the ones who just hear the songs and think "I've heard this genre done better." in the example of Tomorrow Never Knows. However what they don't realise is that before songs like that, that type of music simply didn't exist. It's a hard concept to grasp nowadays, now that we basically have the same regurgitated crap over and over again, and nothing new and creative on the music scene.

The Beatles were good. I do think that Elvis and Madonna were/are overrated though.

Started off doing crowd-pleasing stuff, then off the back of that got into more experimental shit and ended up influencing pretty much EVERYTHING that came after them...

...nah, I don't think they were overrated at all. Maybe at the beginning, but if it hadn't been for that adulation and the resultant freedom to do ANYTHING, then maybe people wouldn't have listened to the awesome later stuff, but it's... it's kind of a weird question for that very reason.

They were certainly influential, but "influencing pretty much EVERYTHING that came after them"?

Let's not overdo it!

The Blues, Jazz, Folk and country music (to name but four) have all been the primary influence for lots of bands, and all significantly pre-date The Beatles..
