That's why we have Radio 4.

I hope it's not just going to be a clone of absolute radio with aspects of radio x what would be the point.

There's a real gap out there for the ex radio1 generation those in there late 20s, 30s and 40s those who just like good music not restricted by genre or artist. Pop, rock, indie and credible dance with a dash of quality rnb and hip hop etc, current, recent and classics from the 90's onwards with the odd 80s classic.

Mainly listen to 6 Music for the chat, even though it's supposed to be a music station. Playlist is repetitive; I'd tune out if it wasn't for the entertainment.

I'd say by having Edith on at Breakfast this is exactly the audience they are hoping to capture, those that might of listened to Radio 1 in the 00's but now feel they are a bit too old for it.

That's the same thing I thought when Radio X launched (e.g. Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay)

I bet virgin are kicking themselves they couldn't get Moyles first

Interesting thought. I'm sure at some point they probably considered him.

I doubt he would have taken the job - think the FM coverage in London and Manchester with X is what swung his decision to join them.

There's lots of good entertaining speech content on the radio. I was referring to certain breakfast shows on stations which boast through straplines their excellent music content.

Now if a breakfast show used the old Laser558 strapline I'd listen. Not going to happen, is it.

It's not going to happen as it won't work now, the reason Laser worked is because it was launched at the right moment in time, when it was needed. It will never work today as the landscape is so different and so much more choice available. People can listen to whatever their mind takes them because the choice is unlimited from other media

Agree, many reasons it couldn't work in it's previous form today, although there are reasons why the format as a land based operation still could.

The point I was making relates to the 'the music is never more than a minute away' strapline. Some so called music stations today would struggle with 15 minutes.

Plus we have to bear in mind that if Laser 558 was on the air today, the majority of her output would be the vacuous auto-tuned rubbish that infects the charts nowadays.

Any predictions as to which song will be played first on the station?

Oh, there were definitely talks. Budget is one thing to consider - Moyles is on telephone numbers at Radio X.

Don't forget, though, Edith Bowman probably would've been doing Vernon's show if she hadn't been offered breakfast at Virgin.

Do we reckon the new Virgin is going to be playing a wide range of genres? Rock, Indie, dance, pop etc?
I can see them playing everything from Oasis to Paloma Faith, from The Stones to Lana Del Ray

I very much doubt that. Radio X was around a long time before Virgin even came about!

U2: Beautiful day. Branson is a big U2 fan. I know he doesn't own the station, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has some involvement in the launch. Or a Bowie song.

Changes, as it seems that Virgin is not going to be like it was when it changed its name to Absolute
