With a former Radio 1 DJ and Xtra Factor host could it play more commercial music?”

All of the above hopefully. I'm hoping for something similar to Radio 1 who play a mix of genres, rock, pop, dance, new music, etc.

Jon Holmes would of been my choice but Bowman will do.

Leave Jon Holmes on Radio X where all of us can hear him on DAB, not Virgin which discriminates against less populated areas.

I didn't realise D1 had 100% UK coverage...

They are going after Absolute Radio with more real album music (Absolute says that they doing that, but they don't), so Virgin becomes UK's real album station.

I didn't realise that you could get D1 across the Highlands and Islands (?)

I asked Edith what the playlist was like on Twitter and she replied with "brilliant" - so there you have it!

Edith is a great choice, will be good to have her back on the radio. Intrigued to see if musically they go for a Radio 1/6 Music/XFM/Absolute direction.

The album track format has bombed in the past when it's been tried in this country.

The only thing that would make me listen is if Nick Abbot joined

From his twitter feed it sounds like Tim Cocker is determined to continue broadcasting from the North West, so presumably will use UTVs studios in Wigan for his show (or they build a studio for him at UTV Media HQ in Warrington).

Kate's proved herself to be a very competent DJ and is a household name (isn't she?).

When Virgin was originally proposed I'm sure it was only to be presenter led at breakfast (and drive?) and automated the rest of the time, so this seems fairly ambitious. Question is, in a world with Absolute and Radio X, as well as Kerrang and 6music, is there room for Virgin?”

UTV brand is TALK. They have 4 streams to fill.
1) talkSPORT 2 is the obvious 1st station with programme-sharing making it financially viable
2) talkRADIO was the original station for 1089/1053. So they must be an audience for it
3) news type so talkBUSINESS. Decided it would require too much resources to setup so outsourced to Share Radio
4) That is sport, chat and news so no other TALK alternatives. So need to use the spare station as music. With an already crowded market with stations like Absolute, Radio X, Kerrang and 6music, this station needs something to attract listeners. So they have licenced the familar "Virgin Radio" name. They are also launching with a full lineup so it doesn't sound like a "cupboard station". But with FM stations like Jack, Sam, Fire financially required to be cut to the bone, the full lineup on Virgin Radio will only be short-lived (when they see the RAJAR figures). Enjoy it whilst you can!

It's got far more coverage than D2, so Jon Holmes would have a lower potential audience if he moved from X to Virgin

Jamie East is from the gossip site, Matt isnt was i'd describe as a 'rock' type presenter... my guess it will be more pop orientated during the day learning to indie/rock at night like radio 1... but more grown up!

As they are on D2 mono rather than D1, plus stereo online, looks like they are keeping costs down and hopefully will return a profit. They won't get 2.2m listeners like last time but might be happy near 1m which is achievable.

Well, I would personally find Edith to be a huge turn-off - but each to their own and all that.

Agree that the line-up after 12 months is highly likely to be heavily stripped back but good on 'em for giving it a go.

The playlist is critical. There is certainly a gap in the market for a grown-up R1, playing a diverse range of 'credible' yet accessible music interspersed by entertaining and reasonably knowledgeable DJs. It's a tough act to nail though and this day in age if people find the music to be too old / too cheesy / too eclectic / too repetitive they won't stick with it. I was a bit concerned by the Floyd/Blondie tweeted lyrics. There are more than enough 'Dad rock' stations on DAB already.

Heaven forbid that they should actually do something different.

Completely agree with all that. It sounds like (along with TalkRadio) they're trying to recreate two formats which ultimately proved to be not very successful.

Things do move on, and costs are now lower, but the audience is more fragmented and 6 Music is a tough competitor at the credible end of the market. The only advantage is, perhaps, not having the "banter" that is on Absolute, 6 Music and Radio X, but I doubt Edith will be much of a draw in herself.

That said, good luck to them. I hope it's not another classic rock station and is much more credible pop.
