Well I'll pipe up as someone who owns both Android and Apple phones. I feel generally underwhelmed. App permissions, Android Pay and finger print stuff don't seem like headline features to me. Sort of felt like I was accidentally watching Apple's last keynote, nothing new here. Longer battery standby times are nice but I can't help but feel we'd all prefer them to concentrate on longer use times. I rarely worry about my phone's battery on standby I do when I'm using it heavily. Maybe all the small changes they alluded to will really add up to something, we'll have to wait and see.

I will say that things picked up with the Now on Tap feature and Google Photos. Can't wait to try those (although I have a Xperia z3 so I may be waiting for over a year!)! Google still at its best with this kind of big data stuff. Apple will always struggle to compete here in my view.

I agree, bit underwhelmed. I feel after 5.0 they could have focused on mistakes related to 5.0 such as the memory leak and battery bugs, it was briefly mentioned then never mentioned again. Instead they announce 6 minor features, 1 that isn't available in the UK, 1 that isn't supported on the majority of Android hardware etc. What they could have done is talked about how they're dealing with fragmentation etc. Let down really.

I had the same feeling. I was underwhelmed at the start with Android M and then Android Wear 5.1, that update is already released why spend so long at I/O as if it is all new. Things picked up at the end with the Internet of Things, offline maps etc, but I feel that this I/O was targeted at two demographics, the USA(Android Pay etc) and emerging markets like India(Fast chrome browsing).

I will be testing Android M on both my Nexus 5 and 9 so I should be able to tell if standby life has increased.

This year is more about refinements than major overhauls. Hopefully manufacturers get Android M out quicker than they did Lollipop because of this.

Having played with M for a few minutes now, my first impression is that it's better than Lollipop already, especially the infernal Silent Mode. I accept it's only a Developer Preview, but I can already see some lag on my N5 that just this morning got 42000 on Antutu, noticeable when switching the rotation lock on. This is the kind of thing that google really need to fix, the N5 isn't the flagship nexus any more but it's still bloody powerful, lag at this point is due to bad optimisation.

The new launcher style I like. Google Now on Tap doesn't work yet.

Now to test the battery overnight.

A few other snippets:

Unlimited free video and photo storage with Google Photos.

Inbox is now no longer invite only and available to all.

Android Pay and fingerprint support built in (rather then relying on custom OEM implementations)

Google Now is being enhanced.

It is interesting that Google are introducing fingerprint sensor and home button functionality. I would expect to see more android phones with physical home buttons appearing.

Maybe the next nexus will have one.

What I dont get is why do all this now and not mention the new nexus devices? Everyone knows most of these features are aimed at that so quite a few savy people will now hold off upgrading until google unveils this on thier new phone.

Google I/O has never been a consumer oriented show.

They're doing "all this now" for the benefit of developers, so that they have time to work with the new features in M.

There will almost certainly be some kind of event/announcement sometime in October/November for Nexus as has been the case for sometime now.

I doubt it. Having a fingerprint sensor in the home button isn't the only place it can go, HTC, Huawei, Nubia, Pantech, Oppo etc have all demonstrated that.
LG haven't demonstrated a fingerprint sensor yet, but I think Google had a spoiler in the keynote and it basically looked like a Nexus 5 but with a metal frame, without speakers/mic on the bezel and USB type C.

The new Google Now stuff looks the best out of what they showed. It being able to essentially read what is on the screen and provide you with answers relevant to that content is pretty cool (and kinda creepy too).

It does look good for those who already embrace Google now and aren't especially worried about privacy, however I don't understand how it will always get the context right. I can't wait to try it though, I imagine it will make an appearance in the second dev preview.

A 10 min video of the highlights and over view here:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/28/86...ncements-recap

Maybe Google should release a new version of Android every 2 years given how awful the crawl out err I mean roll out is. Thus giving Manufactures and Networks more time to think deeply about updates

App permissions is far from minor folks.

There is tons of apps that for no logical reason ask for (and get if installed) permission to read your contact list, call log and sms content. Some also get the app list you have installed, access your storage, and imei data.

Currently the only way to block this stuff is rooting your phone and utilising tools such as xprivacy or lbe, both of those have downsides and really we need control in the OS built in itself.

Could someone that has installed "M" see if they fixed the problem with playing back Opus files? Just drop an .opus file in your Music directory and see if the native player can play it.

For some weird reason Lollipop doesn't support Opus files in its native container but will play them back if you wrap them in MKV (but without metadata support).

I'm using the MKV workaround for my ringtones but the lack of metadata support prevents me from doing the same with my music, so i'm hopeful that M will fix this.

Downloaded it. Offered me the option between VLC and Play Music. Play Music wouldn't play it though.

That's disappointing. Hopefully Google will fix the problem by the time M final gets released. Thanks for testing.
