Getting new Sky remote to work with box?

Ok my parents just got a new Sky remote for their sky box, it's just an old one, not HD. Now I assumed it would just work out of the box but it doesn't?,I know you put a code in for using it for the tv but do you have to programme it for using the Sky box too?

Presumably they bought the wrong remote?, the correct one would work as is.

Do you not need to put a code in so it works with the telly

Answer is yes - It is getting difficult to buy a remote specifically set up for original sky boxes. However, as Chris Frost's link shows you can enter codes to change remote to control old boxes. I know this works, as I have done same myself several times.

Obviously , but if you buy the correct remote it works 'out of the box' for the Sky box.

Not to mention why would you want the extra unused buttons of a Sky+ remote for a standard box.

Only just found time to visit my parents this evening so I'll sort their remote out at the same time, thanks for the replies folks.

And yes I know it seems silly buying a brand new Sky hd remote for a none hd box but that's all the shops sell isn't it, could have got a second hand one on eBay or something but my parents bought it before I could do anything. Never mind!

No it's not - any decent retailer stocks all three Sky remote controls.

I got it working with the box anyway thanks to the link above, and managed to get it working with the TV too, happy days!
