no matter how hard dtc tries the audience will never love shirley carter
Before he arrived she was a second division occasional character probably not that far from the axe
as he admitted she was his favourite character his main drive was to make her front and centre of the show. He has succeeded in that however despite him seeing her as some kind of tragic sue Ellen type heroin. Just don't think the public will ever buy into his vision, but he will keep trying as long as he is in charge |

Marmite characters are good for the show. People love to talk about Shirley whether they love or loath her.

I don't know if DTC is trying hard to make anybody love Shirley anyway, maybe he's trying to get us invested in her, but not to love her. I personally adore Shirley and the character but when she said to Mick that Stan wasn't his dad last night, even with the good intentions behind it I genuinely was angry at Shirley. In fact Shirley's behaviour this entire week hasn't exactly been the best if I'm honest with you and that's coming from somebody who genuinely does love the character. It's funny that there's rarely anybody who thinks that Shirley is just okay, they either seem to love her, or despise her and want her gone from the show.

I find her quite boring these days but LH and TW were very good last night. Shame he's gone and Buster has arrived.

I love Shirley. (And so do my flatmates) I don't think how they have written her around Dean/Linda has done her any favours as the audience just see her 'backing a rapist' but she is a brilliant, complex and fascinating character. I think she is the best of the Carters.
![]() It's all swings and roundabouts - when she came back with Buster and prior to Christmas there was a lot of love for Shirley, backing Dean after generated a lot of hate, then there was love for her again during the the time Dean was away and she was cracking out her one liners again and starting to reconcile with Mick, then Dean came back and caused problems and then last night, there was a lot of praise. So it all depends on the material. I would like them to stop with the self sabotage though and allow Shirley to have a bit of happiness. Linda Henry is a fantastic actress and there is so much more they could do with Shirley. I do miss the feisty, fun Shirley who is reeling out the one liners. However, I have loved learning about her history and the additons of Sylvie and Buster. Plus like has been said already, you may love Shirley, hate Shirley, love to hate her, and so on but she generates a lot of interest and gets people talking and that is what they want from characters, better than a character just slipping through the radar undetected. |

Shirley is the best one out of the lot, and I can't stand the family. If they were axed tomorrow I wouldn't care less, but they'd make sure they kept Linda Henry/Shirley! .

.Shirley is much more enjoyable now she has a family and isn't walking around doing practically nothing like she did for the majority of 2013. However, I still think Shirley was at her best with Heather. They weren't half a pair! .

If anything, it's the introduction of the Carters that have turned a lot of the audience against Shirley

Shirley was a marmite character long before the carters even existed. Her treatment of heather was appalling and I think explains a lot of why some people loathe her.

I hate Shirley as a character - she's a selfish, miserable, twisted, mean, hateful, hypocritical hag of a woman and has been long before her family showed up - remember how she treated Heather? How she kept Phil drunk to keep him with her? , but she is very watchable due to Linda Henry's performance of her.
I hope the character stays in the show, but I hope they stop the nonsensical ploy of making us try and feel sympathy for things that we shouldn't feel sympathetic for when it comes to her. She's not a martyr, she's completely self serving and the sooner they embrace that, the better. |

What nonsense! I think your personal opinion is clouding your overall assesment. Shirley Carter is one of the most loved characters on EE right now. Certainly if you look at Twitter, facebook and the official website .
I hate Mick Carter. I wouldn't dispute that he is a much loved character though. |
