Shirley Carter is a controversial character, no doubt about that. I was one of her biggest haters last year but recently I have warmed to Shirley slightly

Shirley provokes strong reactions from people. But last night's episode made me feel a LOT sorry for Shirley. Shirley never meant to say that Stan wasn't Mick's father. She only said this so that Mick can go home and she "spared" his pain so he doesn't have to see his father suffering to death. Yes I'm aware that Stan is technically Mick's grandfather but Stan will always be his father. Linda Henry's acting has been phenomenal and my heart broke for her in the end

Shirley's line, "Mick will probably hate me even more now. But that's alright, I can live with that. Better off on my own. Always have been".

Give this woman more awards!! As long as Shirley stays away from Phil, then I can forgive her for her actions last year

Linda Henry is one of Eastenders best. She is excellent. I cannot fault Linda Henry at all. One of Eastenders best. I know Shirley is a love/hate character. I went off her during the Linda rape story, but she has made up with Mick and Linda, so I am back to loving her again.

She was great. And I love the fact that Shirley didn't run when the going got tough (maybe for the first time), showed her father respect and forgave him for the past.

I agree with every single word.

Shirley is a controversial character, she provokes strong reactions from viewers and is probably one of the most complex characters to grace EastEnders! I love her.

Linda Henry is absolutely incredible. Her delivery last night was flawless and I could not fault a thing.

That line was heartbreaking, she was only saying it so Mick would go home but it broke her heart to do it. She was honouring Stan's wishes where he had asked her to protect Mick and for it to just be him and her at the very end. You see Shirley says one thing, but her body language reveals how she is really feeling and that is all down to how brilliant Linda Henry is.

While supporting Dean, Shirley - characterwise, might be going through a rough patch but that is only temporary, I am sure she will find out soon enough.

The last scene with Shirley hugging Stan on the bed was heartbreaking and Linda H (and Tim W) was simply amazing last night. I like how this time, Shirley didn't run, she stepped up and stayed with Stan, as he wished, until his last moments.

High five to Linda Henry, she deserves as many awards as they can chuck at her, long overdue, imo!

She's a great actress, I don't think she is given enough praise or recognition.

I did. We have seen Cora and Shirley share some lovely scenes this year, I would like to see more between the pair.

They've actually got a lot in common and I'd say they're equally matched.

Definitely agree. They do have similarities and now that Cora (although she didn't marry Stan) has been linked to the Carters, I would like to see a friendship develop. There also seems to be an understanding between and like you say, they are equally matched and have common ground.

After listening to Phil. Therein lies the relationship between these two.

It was similar to Shirley talking to Phil about Max in the lives. Phil and Shirley call each other up on things and make the other think. There is a bond between them and they trust each othe, even after they blackmail and hurt each other.

Oh yes. these two trust each other, and strangely enough I think they are each others best friend.

Linda's a fantastic actor. That final scene with Stan when he died was amazing, subtle acting from both of them. I truly think it's one of the best scenes I've seen in all my years watching he programme (from the start), so real.

I also agree that Shirley was being cruel to be kind when it comes to Mick. She had to say something to make him leave so Stan's wishes could be adhered to without actually yelling "he doesn't want you there!" (even though Stan was protecting Mick rather than being nasty with this request). You could see when Mick left she had hated doing it.

It wouldn't surprise me if Shirley and Phil have another affair

I hope they don't. The getting each other friendship is far more powerful.

I hope not too but sometimes the producers can't resist reuniting Phil and Shirley all the time. I'm glad they're just friends now as I think they have moved on.

I'm hoping the relationship has gone beyond that...soap friendships are far more powerful.

I have always liked Shirley and Phil's friendship scenes. They obviously care for each other a lot. I just don't want to see Shirley being a pathetic lovesick puppy. The sad fact is that Phil doesn't love Shirley anymore. He did love her before but he doesn't deserve Shirley. I hope we will continue to get lots of friendship scenes between Phil and Shirley - they confide in each other a lot about their secrets. They're also good confidants.

I always wonder why Linda never gets nominated for awards. She is always overlooked sadly. She is one of the best ever EE actresses and the show is very lucky to have Linda Henry.

Brilliant post, I agree. I like Phil and Shirley when they are equal and they are more equal as friends.

It's a shame that she doesn't get as much credit as she deserves. She is consistently brilliant and always pulls it out of the bag, no matter what they make Shirley do.

The show is lucky to have her and I would say she is one of the best on the show. I think DTC said that because she is so private and doesn't like to do interviews and so on, she doesn't get as much recognition as she should (or wtte), which is very true.

On talent alone, I think we should just give her a dozen awards.
