Old Granada Studios Tour lot
Hi all
Was watching Ed Miliband launching the Labour Party manifesto on the news earlier at what was described as "the old Coronation Street set", but it looked like they were walking past the old replica Rovers Return pub from the Granada Studios Tour of the late '80s/'90s (the one where you could actually have a pint; it stood apart from the set itself). I had no idea this was still standing, I assumed all the elements of the old tour (aside from the Street itself of course) had long been bulldozed. Do they still use the "Rovers" for corporate events and so forth, anybody know...? |

Although the old Granada Studio Tour is no longer, the Coronation Street set still exists and tours started up again there last April. Initially, it was only for a limited period (up to October, I think) but it was so popular, the run was extended.
The land has been sold though and the set will be demolished at some point, as the developers want to build on it. |

The outside of the old Rovers set is still there but not accessible on the tour, it's hidden away from tourists but you can see it from afar.

I once went on the Granada Studios Tour during the 90s and the replica that you're talking about looks very similar to one that was there, but when you walked in it was some sort of cafe / shop area.
The pub was a facade, that's all. It was near to an old Sherlock Holmes set. |

It was an actual working "Rovers" that you could drink in when I went, but it also had a walk-through to a carvery restaurant. According to Wikipedia this had a mockup of the Woolpack from Emmerdale at one point.

It's a year this Saturday since I did the tour, glad to see that it's still running, must be a nice little money spinner for them and I'm assuming the developers now get a cut too for agreeing to keeping it open.

I went to the official tour back in September, it was great
I live in Manchester, and I know that the 'original' Granada studios set tour exists still, the old (very grand) boarded up entrance is next to the car park entrance for the MOSI, if anyone local is on. I've also been to the Quay Street studios, which was the tall building which used to say GRANADA TV on it (always loved that), but has now been closed and operations moved to MediaCity. I've hear Quay Street is to be demolished for flats and offices, but due to the success of the tour down the road it's been extended. I highly recommend the tour, it was really good.

Did anybody who visited the original tour ever do that thing where you "filmed a scene" via green screen? I recently unearthed the VHSs from the two times I did it which I didn't think I still had; I might stick them on YouTube one of these days if I figure out how.
It was all pretty cheap and cheerful but a bit of fun - it's a shame they don't do it on the new tour as they could probably make a bit more hi-tech these days (CGI?) |
