Just seen that this one has reared its ugly head. (again?) Not strictly computer related, but be aware. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/d...477/a_id/13395 |

Just had another one of these calls. I told the guy I was glad he'd called as my computer was broken and I thought windows was to blame. I asked for his address so I could send him the bill. His response was "our address is f, dash, dash, k, o, dash, dash. Goodbye"
At least he has a slight sense of humour |

I got one of those strange calls last week. I asked how he would know that my computer was having problems. ( it was). Can't remember the answer but I was busy. If I hadn't I might have let him carry on and follow instructions that didn't look to suspicious but I wouldn't have let him have remote access. I was wary of giving the Norton guy access and I had contacted them

I got one of these calls a while back and I thought "here is an opportunity to waste his time so he can't scam anyone else".
I pretended to be a complete idiot who couldn't do the simplest thing on a computer and tied him up for ages and when he asked to take control of my computer I asked for his contact details and he hung up. |

metropolitan police scam message
Sorry if I am posting in the wrong thread but I have somehow managed to get the metropolitan police scam message downloaded. I have found several sites with info on how to get rid of this but I am worried that they are also fake sites!! Please help! I am using an old computer to type this message but is it possible to dowload a removal tool from an 'official' site to a memory stick or disk and use it in the infected computer. Would appreciate any advice.
My son tells me that there was a call from an indian gentleman teling him that there was a virus on his computer but my son told him to call back later when I was in and put the phone down. ![]()

Firstly, if any credit/debit card numbers have been divulged, cancel the card.
Secondly. it would be better in its own thread. Cut and paste your text, go back to forum and click New Thread (top left). bleepingcomputer.com is a trustworthy site. But need to Google for exact Removal Guide |

I wondered how long it would be before I received the so-called "Microsoft" phone call, some company in the UK must of sold our details as they knew who I was, those people making the phone calls are scum, no surprise the phone call wasn't traceable.

Dealing with scum scammers
Would be nice if ther was a program that allowed you to let them connect but as soon as they do they receive your Trojan blocking them access to your own computer. Then your Trojan immediately wipes out all their connected hard drives.
Would feel nice to know they been hit with exactly what they wanted to do to you and probably discourage them. |

I get lots of these. I now say I am using a work laptop (which is true some of the time) and give them our IT help desk number. This results in an instant hang up.
Once when i asked where they were phoning from they said London and when I asked where in London he said Baker Street. He hung up as soon as I asked whether he knew Sherlock Holmes

If David Cameron came up with a proposal to stamp this out instead of stupid things, like 80mph on motorways, et al, I might even vote Lib-Dem.

What I really mean, is this should be stamped out by The Government (of any persuasion).
As a committed Left Footer, I could not bring myself to vote Tory. That's all. |

And what could the Government actually do?

Ah yes, because the world's most powerful governments have been highly successful at controlling the internets thus far!

The Government could put pressure on foreign countires to prosecute fraudsters.
CLID info (unless spoofed) can be tracked at source or through international exchanges. Just takes money and resources. |

You've thwarted your own solution there, it's simply too easy to fake the origin of a phone call. Unless you would have every international phone call actively screened by a government agency, you've got no chance of stopping this. If the problem resides in a country with no laws or interest in curbing it, legislation will do nothing.

Strung them on for a bit, but was bored.
"We have only one word for people like you" "what's that then?" "you are a f*ckoff" |

Thank god for this thread! My Mum got scammed, paid £140 for 5 years's support and allowed them remote access. After reading this thread I've restored the system to a month ago, uninstalled all the programmes they installed and done a virus check. Mum has also cancelled the account details she gave them.
Can anyone think of anything else I should do? Thanks to everyone who has given advice on this thread it has all helped me today. |
