i got one the other day from "Virgin Media" informing me that my Virgin Media Security Suite had reported some issues, to which i replied, thats funny because i never installed it, they then asked me to do the whole remote access thing and then i said that the website wouldnt load because their internet service is shocking and requested to speak with his line manager about conpensation, that lead to a cafuffle and then i think he accidentally hung up on me cause the line suddenly went dead!!

another one i heard about was aa elderly friend of mine received a call requesting that they took at a look at their Microsoft registry and it appears they are using a fraudulent Windows serial key, her response, thats funny cause i dont have a computer in the house . . . or the internet. she ended up having a 7 and a half minute discussion as they were insistant that she did own a PC . . . when she REALLY doesn't lol. made me chuckle.

this has all kicked up again. received a load of calls this week - some friends and family too.

Just blow a fart down the line for as long as you can then hang up before they do.

Made my day! Ludicrous. They must be really desperate.

Well the last call I had from them came up on caller id as 00000 000000 if that's any help

I adore caller id. If you want to get hold of me, make sure you don't call with an "out of area" number. I become strangely incapable of picking the phone up when I read those words. I don't know anybody abroad so it's always going to be a waste of my time answering.

I had one of these calls yesterday, myself and the kids played along for a while before hanging up....the b*gger rang me back today and talked dirty down the phone, thank goodness I didn't put THAT one on speakerphone!

I hung up and he rang straight back so I just didn't say anything when I answered, he hung up and so far so good he hasn't rang back!

Surely this should be illegal? I'm assuming it's only not as the calls originate offshore

Just had another call from "Alvin Drake" at "Computer Maintenance Department".....he hung up and disconnected before I'd finished shouting that there was nothing wrong with my computer.

I have now had six, yes six attempts to scam me out of money by telling me that my computer has a virus/malware/ reversed peristalsis and so on. All six attempts have failed. The last call I received was from someone calling themselves Jesus. Another one was from Charlie Brown.

They must think I have the memory span of a goldfish. They keep trying and they always fail. A quick way to stop them is ask one question, "What's my IP address?" They can't or won't answer that.

Lately, I have given them a rant down the phone.

"THIS IS NOW THE SIXTH TIME YOU'VE TRIED THIS SCAM. IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK. I AM NOT DOWNLOADING DODGY SOFTWARE. I AM NOT PAYING YOU FOR IT. I AM NOT GIVING YOU ACCESS TO PASSWORDS AND I AM NOT GIVING YOU CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD DETAILS. DO NOT RING THIS NUMBER AGAIN!"

Surely if it was Jesus, he'd be able to fix your computer without you needing to do anything!

After the rant I gave him over the phone, I'm sure as far as that scammer's concerned, I am the Prince of Darkness.

I was sometimes getting six calls a week. Tactics varied from saying I had a ZX81 but with the 16K RAM pack, asking which of my 50 PCs has the virus? or stringing them along for as long as possible until they get me to log in to their remote access website. I pretend I have problems connecting to it until I say, "Oh yes, it is loading now" and pretend to read off the screen: 'this website is used by scammers, do not continue'.

Haven't had a call for three weeks now so hopefully they've finally got the message.

You'd think that by now police cooperation between the UK and the country where the calls originate would have mopped this up. I'm surprised it's still going on and is so widespread.

No more illegal than somebody calling offering to replace your double glazing for less than £2000 or offering to get you £5000 compo for a recent accident or a refund of £1000 for credit card PPI.

It's up to you if you say "Yes please, I'll have some of that !"

Also I would guess many of the posts on this subject are just peoples' fantasies of what they "think" they would do if they ever receive such a phone call.

'Jesus? Have you come to save mankind from his sins?'

'Er...no'

'Well, f**k off then!'

There was a warning in the local paper that they're targeting Blackpool and the Fylde at the moment. I hope they phone me again, it was fun last time

I keep saying to myself after having a number of these calls when I have kept them talking for as long as I could and "following" their instructions interspersed with "sorry can you repeat that again" and actually achieving with the last call 6.25 minutes of wasting his time before telling him in no uncertain terms exactly where he can stuff his scam product, the message may finally get through and I will be blacklisted by them and all other cold calling companies.

For all those posting here who string them along and waste their time, thanks very much, you are helping the cause, keep it up eventually we may actually win when we have converted more people to waste the time of these despicable scam merchants. The power to get rid of them is in the hands of the public.

You'll be pleased with me, Caxton - yesterday I kept the phone monkey and his 'technician' on for 21 minutes.
I was suprised at their tenacity - though in the end 'tech guy' thanked me for wasting his time - I replied "You're welcome!"
That they can afford to spend so long on a call does show there must be some rich pickings though

I am very pleased, if everyone did this, if they could spare the time, we might get the number of these scam callers drastically reduced and if there were enough who did this virtually eliminated. The answer is keep them talking as long as possible without of course giving any personal details away to them. I think my next goal is to beat your 21 minutes.
