They have a script for that too.
True they do. After keeping one on the line for 40 odd minutes (I was bored) I told him I'd made a mistake and had a Mac and not a windows PC. Rather than hanging up as I'd expected, he just started from scratch with the Mac script. It took him a minute or two before he worked out what I'd done, called me a naughty name, and then hung up

Next time I'll see if I can break the hour, but I'll have to be really bored.

Great
What about a works pc? I can remote on to a virtual desktop. They ask you to use the run command, so I would say "Oh, it says this action has been disabled by your administrator"
Would they have a script for that?

They "remove the virus"* at a price. The victim (usually someone vunerable ie elderly) gives credit card details and it's charged. I know of someone through a volunteer centre I was at who was stung for £250.

*They don't actually do anything just take the money.

i get these all time too ...i usually play along with them if im not busy

they ask you to open run box then type 'eventvwr' this brings up event viewer which shows any errors your system has had (which all pcs will have )

they then ask you to goto logmein.com so they can 'repair' your pc

they are dumb they ask you to write the password in and you say i wrote **** you ...they say no its ....

i just like keeping them on phone for as long as possible as it prob costs them money to call and they not pestering someone else if i hold them up.

when you get abusive with them, they get abusive back.....ive had some funny arguments with them

For the last week i have been getting lots of calls with the number withheld. So i decided to lay a trap for the next time they called. I have Ubuntu on my computer and installed VirtualBox and set it up with XP.
Then i got a call from Dave who ran through the script on how they had received reports that my computer had been infected and how he could help me.
So i booted up my virtual XP machine and he ask me to look for errors in event viewer. Then i let him log in remotely i was passed on to Richard who started to fix the errors and read the same script to me again.
Next passed on to Ian after just over an hour i was losing the will to live and told him his tech guys were not very clever as this was only a virtual machine and i had just been playing with them. But he must have been a idiot as he did not seem to know what a VM was and still kept asking be if i wanted to sign up for 1,3,or 5 years cover.

about 12pm someone saying I apparently hacking into a server or something from what I could make out he sounded indian and he was very annoyed. I wouldnt have been bothered as I couldn't hack to save my life but it was coincidental that my main hotmail account has been shut down lately. is this a scam or could I possibly have downloaded something that''s affected other computers?

That must have been why he was so annoyed with the OP.

They now seem to be using what looks like a UK number of 0441234765093.
The Scam the same so take it they are now using this to try and look legitimate.

After double figures of these calls you would think they would give up.
Have told them use Linux, don't have a PC , use a Tablet and the last time;

I asked which PC has the errors ?
They then asked what did I mean ?
I said which of my PCs is reporting these errors ?
They then asked how many PCs do I have ?
I replied about 300.
Line went dead.

I am now getting very bored and they normally last about 10 seconds now.

Dave

They'll resort to anything just to try and con money out of people who don't understand computers much.

Wiki on spoofing is quite interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing

Eventually made illegal in USA. I doubt if that's made any difference to the basic premise of the scam. ie people will still fall for it.

Not sure on UK law, or just Guidelines?

Hi.
I just posted the following in Advice and was directed here. From what my respondent (thanks, dodgygeeza) said, there's not much can be done but I thought it was worth posting anyway.....

AMMY scam

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi. Am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My mum received a phone call earlier today (she's a newbie to the internet). A foreign woman providing an English name- 'Christina Moore' (yeah, we all know this wheeze- mum asked her to spell it out, though!) told mum that there were problems with her computer and that she would talk her through the solutions. Mum, again being new to using the internet, was rushing to an appointment so said she didn't have long. The woman was trying to get her to log on to www.ammy.com but mum didn't as she ran out of time. The woman said she would call back tomorrow at 9am. Being suspicious, mum managed to get a phone number from her and told me about it. I was later at mum's house, rang the number and got the woman (mum confirmed it was the same person) who denied any knowledge of the call and said I had got through to some transport company before cutting me off.

Obviously, this is a scam and no harm was done as mum never followed the woman's instructions. What we really want to know if there is any value in reporting the mobile phone number for investigation and, if so, who to report it to? We have since read up on the 'ammy scam' and it seems like it's being going on in various countries under a number of variations.

For what it's worth, if anyone receives a call from the phone number 08081 890115 do not play ball (unless you fancy ringing it and winding a scam merchant up!). These people are parasites. I think I spooked the woman and she's unlikely to call back but mum knows what to do if she tries!

Don't ring any numbers back. Some use Premium Rate charging schemes.

A quick Google on the above leaves me none the wiser. But best not to do it.

Tell your Mum to just put the phone down on the caller.

Received my first PC call yesterday.

A person with a foreign accent said 'I'm calling about your computer.'

I firmly placed my phone back onto the receiver.

Always used to be some claiming to be calling from "Windows"which isn't the company name anyway.Yesterday same muppets called now claiming to be calling from "BT support"very pushy they kept insisting they knew that I had nasties lurking on my machines and when I told them I wasn't interested they advised me that if I didn't use their fantastic service all of my P.C.s would fail to boot the next morning.Needless to say the latter never happened.

You should have told them that you don't switch your PCs off.....that would have stumped them .......nowhere to go after that.

If they ask you what windows you have, just say double glazed.
