He gave me a number "44 207 099 0930"

the number is live and has a foreign sounding ring ,is answered and when asked...... Are you Microsoft, the response is no, we're a technical support operation.
Why don't we all phone up and tell them they have a virus on their computer system and would they click Start > Run etc etc

Got another one of these today from an Indian sounding woman who said her name was Irene. LOL.
Unfortunately I was on my way out so with no time to string her along I just had to hang up. Shame.

My grandad gets these calls around the same time every day! He is with talk talk. Is there any way talk talk can block those calls?

I've had 3 of these calls in the past 10 days all from Indian sounding men. They wanted me to turn on my computer and give them login details so they could 'solve my problem'. I told them to go away but not so politely!!

I had another call this morning just as I was getting ready to go out, rather than put the receiver to one side and ignore it for several minutes as I usually do I actually lost it and basically told the guy to go and have sex with himself.

I think they must be using the phone book as my brother got one of these calls shortly before I did, from the same 'Indian call centre'.

They seem to think that by repeatedly shouting words like GENUINE and WINDOWS we lose the ability to make rational decisions.

I suggest they work on their phone manner a bit more, and perhaps take some voice and acting lessons.

Had another one of these calls yesterday.

I decided to string them along by acting all concerned. The caller passed me over to a technician who took me through msconfig first and showed me programs that were running and stopped. He then asked if I knew why.... so I told him exactly why thinking that would get him.. it didn't. He said a Trojan was stopping the programs running.

He persisted and took me to Event viewer to show error reports etc. I eventually let rip into him after a good 20min on the phone.
I confronted him and to my surprise he was quite abusive back- shouting "No No, Listen to me know".. I just continued my rant and said "goooddbbyyyeee!!" whilst he was still shouting !! hahaha

Just had one of these to my home phone:

Silence, click, click

Indian man does spiel about solving my computer problems.

Me: Oh so you are one of those scammers then?

Line goes dead.

I'm on TPS too, but I guess they don't respect that either.

Had a second call today - tackled him over the issue of ringing people and conning them into thinking there computer is infected and buying software... he didn't hang up.

What was surprising is he knew the IP address of my PC and actually said it over the phone??????

I'm pretty sure it was my IP address of the machine on in the house.
I told them it was wrong anyway so he asked what it was! - just gave him a fake one.

The best way to get these guys back is to stall them and frustrate them on the phone... then at the very end tackle them about the scam and come out clean.

How do you know it was your IP address if you never checked? They really could have just spouted off any old number in the form of an IP address. I highly doubt it would have been yours. It may just have put you on edge because they told you a number that was the same as an IP address, i.e numbers with dots.

Your computers IP address is more than likely a private address, such as 192.168.1.10 which isn't available at all to the open world. Your router/modems IP address will be a public address, but that's for the router/modem only, not your computer.

I'm going to mention a call I received yesterday, the first one I've ever had so far. My son answered the phone. The caller told him they were with our (internet) service provider, and that there appeared to be a problem with our connection as every time we went online, they got a signal telling them we have a virus.

I knew it was a scam, so I told my son to ask them who our service provider is, at which point they said they were with all the main ones, and listed some. At this point, I told son to hang up.

This sort of call really hacks me off, because I know some people will be taken in by it and robbed. If your service provider calls you, they will idenitfy themselves in the first sentence.

Prior to this call but also yesterday, some woman called and asked me to confirm my name. When I asked who was calling, she told me her name was Lynne. I repeatedly asked for the company name, and she hung up on me!!

Yet another of these calls today. It came up International number withheld so I new it would be a scam before I lifted the phone. Same type of story, Support company etc detected harmful files etc. I couldn`t be bothered playing along so when asked what windows version I was using, replied none of the above and the guy hung up.
Only a matter of time till they try again.

I understand the Nigerian Government is looking into this as these new players are threatening their home grown industry.

If people get these calls challenge them, don't just hang up.

I did today and it actually became quite a entertaining argument ending with them saying" shut your mouth" and hanging up. haha

Ask them about Microsoft affiliation - why would they let you ring me?
Ask about the problems nature and how they would fix it?
Pose as a IT engineer who has full security and knows there stuff.
Know your IP address and even windows product key and get them to quote it.
Challange them on the tactics. I guess you will show my Error reports or gain remote access?
Ask is this support free?

etc etc.

I think they persist if people just hang up.

My only concern is...

How do they know Name and Phone Number?
How do they know a Microsoft PC is in the house? (because my caller was adamant after I said it was Mac it was Win7 PC)
They also know (and seem to call) when the PC is on !

That's easy. I bet you are in front of your computer right now.

They just harvest phone numbers and call people randomly. If they called someone without a PC we wouldn't get to know about it on here would we.
