He then proceeded to tell me he could correct this for me via the internet...

At this point I said can you connect me to Bill Gates to discuss further to which it went silent...

He then asked if I had credit cards..

I said yes thanks, why do you sell them too ?

Again silence.

I then said i would much prefer if he came round and sorted it as I prefer to deal in cash...

Again silence.

I then started laughing lots and he hung up, how rude lol

So I think that was a con, anyone had anything similar ?”

The second I realise that the person on the other end is an Indian, the phone goes down.

They've got the nerve for anything. The sad thing is, anyone who's naive, they would have fell for that.

Why did DS ever bother with the pinned sticky on this subject, maybe the mods should make it BIGGER and bright red

I have a simple solution - if the call is International I don't pick up.

Fair enough if the caller ID reveals that, but half the time it just comes up as unknown. For many people, blocking anonymous calls is not an option either.

Just tell them your not interested and hang up unless you plan on trolling them, in which case be sure to post it up on here if its a good one.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum about this.

I tend to employ the "Hang on a moment .. I'll just turn the PC on"
Then leave the phone for 10 mins or so,return and then hang up

I got some advice from TPS

Unsolicited calls here begin either

"Hallo."
"Hallo, may I speak to Mrs Aitch?"
"Mrs Aitch, my mother, lives in Thistown. I'm Miss Aitch.
"Oh, sorry, Miss Aitch."

If I don't have business with their company, the conversation turns to my explaining I'm with the Telephone Preference Service.

Or

"Hallo."
"Hallo, may I speak to Mrs Arr?"
"Mrs Arr moved [number of] months ago."

I explain that I am with the Telephone Preference Service and ask for the name of the business and number they are calling from as I wish to stop receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls. I usually find they hang up at this point.

We've got anonymous call barring which stops much of the crap from the U.K as callers are presented with a message telling them to redial after forwarding their number, but this doesn't stop international calls and those pesky Indians. If we see a blank display we simply don't answer. This annoys the parents if they're calling from abroad<vbg>.Telling them you are running something other than Windoze doesn't seem to stop them.Doesn't stop BT from calling you at 21:00 on a Friday trying to flog you the Infinity service either, maybe that's why they invented the BT Vision box so you can watch the parts of the programme they messed up when they called!

I didn't say that you needed Windoze for Infinity, the dodgy calls allegedly from"Mike Rowesoft"all refer to Windows. The additional remarks about calls from BT were in relation to pesky, unwanted calls at bloody stupid times of day when most people want to be left in peace to watch what little decent stuff is on before some have to head for bed.

My aunt got this call today. She is very gullible and not computer literate so she fell for it. She called me earlier to tell me about it and I told her it was a scam. She was reluctant to believe me at first and told me several times that the Indian woman named Jessica Smith 'sounded genuine'.

Anyway, she didn't pay the £99 asked but, from what I can tell, she did everything else she was instructed (though she can't remember exactly what it was). What should I tell her to do?

Tell her that no-one will phone her from support and not to talk to anyone who phones about her computer. If they are insistent tell them to leave their number and that her niece will phone them back.

Have they not done something to her computer if she gave them remote access?
