Why move to Portugal?

Why is there always a 'mate who can give me some work'?

Why not leave Anna and move two streets away?

Why did he say what sounded like a final GOODBYE to his daughter as if he was gonna be executed?

Ha ha.

Realistically he would have moved close by rather than leave his daughter with no family support.
Difficult when the actor wants out though.

They could have had him move round the corner and get mentioned, but never seen.
A"fat Brenda" kind of deal.
It wouldn't really be any more ridiculous than having the child population of the street disappearing for months at a time.

Because it's in the script.

To be fair, his "mate" had already got him a job in Aberdeen, hadn't he ?

Why did Gary have tears in his eyes when he was saying goodbye? Owen treated him like shite for months on end

Well I am glad he went to Portugal and Aberdeen, just because it cheesed Anna off not to get her own way.

She told him there was no chance of them ever getting back together and not to talk to Faye. Then when he says he going, she was all "You can't go! what about Faye?"

So good on Owen for not giving Anna her own way.

Maybe he secretly wants far away from Anna, her idiot son and ungrateful whiny daughter (who suddenly pushed out the waterworks despite cutting Owen off for weeks and not talking to him).

I like how he actually said to his daughters face that there was nothing in Weatherfield for him! And she responded by saying "me", completely forgetting her own son, Owens Grandson. Awful writing.
