Does anyone truthfully think Coronation Street really needs Sarah Harding, Shane Ward or the husband Tracy Barlow cheated on 13 years ago!!

It seems to me Stuart Blackburn has an obsession with bringing in characters to a shoe whose cast is already at bursting point, & for what?? Exactly what has he done with most of the ones he has introduced?

The Nazirs..... A gym & community centre we rarely see & a story about chickens!!

Andrea..... cheated on her husband, then treated him like sh*t when he couldn't accept it

Maddie.... got with Sophie, played a few tricks on Norris, nothing much else

Luke... one episode with Carla, a couple with Katy & a very sporadic 'relationship' with
Maria, which looks set to end before it's begun when Samia takes her maternity leave!!

Erica.... Shagging Nick non stop, nothing else!!

Sinead.... A 'huge storyline' involving her being paralysed after the minibus crash...except we've barely seen anything of her emotional struggles, or anything else really

Billy....a few sporadic scenes with Sean but hardly a major figure

The only ones who've had any real s/l are Callum, Michael & NotGavin!!
Now he is going to bring in these three more characters ( plus Roy's new female friend, the only one I'm looking forward to) while good long term regulars like Leanne, Maria, Tyrone, Jason, Eva, Audrey & others have spent most of his reign as spare parts as filler in minor scenes at their workplace!!

What's anyone else's take?

While I like the Platts, particularly since Sarah and Bethany returned, other groups of characters have barely had a look in over the past few weeks. We've barely seen Luke and Maddie on-screen this year for instance. Characters like Kevin and Jenny should also be getting more screen time.

I'd agree. The old corrie focused on working some really good indepth storylines with a few sub-stories. Now they keep flinging trash characters and dead-end stories in there which distracts from the main events. Eg. Maria, Luke and the tiling.
It's like they have these 'filler' stories to fire in willy-nilly when they need some minutes filled in an episode. It is a symptom of the 5 episodes a week problem. Some of that is going to be complete dross and bad writing because of the pressure of creating 5 half hours a week.

Soaps need to focus on the characters they have for a while. Eastenders is the worst for development as 90% of each episode is given to mock/Linda and Shirley. Donna, kush, the cokers, Vincent and claudette have barley been developed and longer standing characters like Lola, Liam, billy and the masood are barely used.

In fairness dull-as-dishwater Sinead was Collinson's character, I think Sinead was the last character introduced by Collinson. She was brought in just when Blackburn started but would have been planned under Collinson.

I think CS needs to start using the cast it already has..there is a lot of talent amongst them and yet some are rarely used except in silly little situations where they appear on screen for seconds....and all the central scripts are given to the newbies...all of which nobody is interested in them or the plot...hence losing viewers ..The exceptions for me is Sarah,Bethnay and Gavin..

Well most of the new characters aren't that bad imo so it's the old ones that need axing. The Nazirs just need to be given a decent storyline that isn't just a poor comedic plot and it looks like they will get that when Kal leaves. I won't be judging them until then.

The rest of the Windass-Armstrong clan need to go, to be replaced by another family; preferably some pleasant people with a credible storyline that we can understand and enjoy.
Pushing 'celebrities', or actors/actresses with family in the cast, to the front of the queue for roles is unfair and doesn't work.

I actually liked Sinead as a quirky little character & was happy enough with her just having interaction with the other quirky Tinker/Sutherland clan! Imo she was entirely the wrong character to give the minibus injury s/l to but having said that, since he did give it to her, he's got to see it through &, in typical Blackburn style he just hasn't done so!
Sarah to be fair isn't really a new character but I have actually developed a real soft spot for new Bethany, she's a proper little breath of fresh air, so he can get it rihht sometimes!! 'Gavin' is ok but the s/l has got away from them altogether & into fantasy land imo!!

This was supposed to be in reply to Gracie L's post about Sinesf but hey, I've msaged to reply to two posts at once!!
