Paula Tilbrook will leave Emmerdale this year after playing Betty Eagleton for 21 years.

After 21 years playing iconic Village gossip Betty Eagleton, Paula Tilbrook will be retiring from Emmerdale.

Betty first appeared in April 1994 for just three episodes when she ordered a sweet sherry in the Woolpack. Being an old friend of Seth Armstrong, she soon put down roots in the Village and even fell prey to wheeler dealer Eric Pollard. Seth proposed at the end of her first year but the marriage never happened as they postponed it indefinitely - remaining a couple until Seth's passing on a trip home from Australia.

As she finished filming at the Emmerdale village for the last time, Paula said:

Today is both the saddest and the happiest day of my life. Happy because I've got everyone here with me but the sad part is I'm leaving. But there is a great atmosphere and it is nice to go out on a high.

– Paula Tilbrook

Commenting on Paula's decision to retire, Kate Oates, Series Producer said: "It's impossible to overstate how much everyone at Emmerdale will miss Paula."

She's created a British television icon: someone who has lit up our screens and touched our hearts.

– Kate Oates

"Off screen, she is an integral part of the Emmerdale family: an inspiration to those she works with, as well as a fabulous raconteur and hilarious storyteller. We are sad to lose her from the programme, but wish her the happy retirement she so deserves."

Paula's last scenes will be aired mid May, so stay tuned to see unforgettable Betty say farewell to the Village forever.

Not unexpected but a shame all the same!

Aww that's a shame but she deserves to sit back and put her feet up now. I wish her a very happy retirement.

Sad news but wish her all the best. I wonder if she has chosen to retire because of her recent break because I thought she'd go on forever. Wonder if she'll be killed off. I heard she left last year because she took Richard Thorps passing hard.

I expect she'll just go to live with Kathy in Australia?

That is such a shame. I adore Betty, what a legend she is. Wish her a very happy retirement

Just thought, maybe she'll get the lifetime achievement award at the soap awards?

This maybe unpopular but i think they should let her die in her sleep and pay tribute to the character onscreen why the actress is still alive and capable of doing so

I'm a bit gutted, she is genuinely one of the best characters on the show and always has been but nothing lasts forever. Enjoy the next chapter Paula, you'll be missed.

Love Betty, and she'll be ever so missed. She already is, really. Lovely funny waspy but warm character.

Wish Paula all the best though, she's been great.

First Viv and now Betty - it's the end of an era When Betty leaves Victoria will then be the longest serving female character on the show!

That's a nice idea. If the actress has retired there's no reason not to. No need to keep the door open and old characters usually get the offscreen death which is a shame especially for iconic characters (usually only when the actor has died though)

Victoria will be the longest running female CHARACTER but Jane Cox will be the longest serving female ACTRESS.

I agree with this.

While it's sad to see the actress leave, it's not really come as a surprise she's had a lot of time off recently and didn't look well when she last appeared.

I think an on-screen death would be beneficial as everyone can then pay their respects to the character.

I am actually happy she has decided to do this. It means we get a proper closure on a long term older character.

It doesn't look like she's going to die, surely we'd all know by now with just a month to go?

I agree.
Betty (Paula) a great part of Emmerdale, even though we have not been able to see her much this past year.
Happy Retirement, Paula.
We will miss you in Emmerdale.
