I thought Sean and the vicar were incredibly rude to the bloke. I know we weren't meant to be but I found myself on his side. He politely told them there had been a problem with their booking and that unfortunately they couldn't stay, nothing wrong with that. It was only when they attacked him that he showed a hint of homophobia.

Unfortunately the deluded writers who see Sean as some fantastic character probably expect us to root for him. He is a whiny, selfish, childish immature idiot who is grating. He is okay when he has some lines in the pub and is like an extra, but they need to stop fooling themselves he is good in a serious plot. Although I do wonder if this is going anywhere or just an excuse to give him more screen time and to act over the top.

Not that this adds to discussion. I remember something like this in the papers a while ago. Gay couple refused by a hotel. Another case of a soap trying to be topical.

I'm not on my own at all. If YOU pay for a building either by buying it or by renting it and YOU pay for your stock and YOU pay the bills on it then YOU should be allowed to sell to who you like.

Using the topical example, I'm sure it'd be a different story if a gay couple had refused to do a baptism cake for a Christian (which I'd also defend their right to do).

To be fair, this double booking came up after Sean said about pushing the beds together and the llok on his face did make it quite clear that was the issue.

If it had genuinely been a double booking then they were out of order and Sean possibly shouldn't have jumped to conclusions but we the audience could tell it wasn't a double booking. He just wanted rid because he was homophobic.

IIRC, the gay couple won their case. Basically, anybody can decide who they want in their private home, but if you open your home or business premises to the Public, like a B+B then you can not discriminate on the ground of race, colour, religion of sexuality. It is illegal.

Well the death bit is clearly exaggerating.

It's the business owner's loss at the end of the day. Money is money and they're turning it away. They won't get the gay person's (or whoever they're discriminating against) money and they won't get their friends/family's business either when they're told about it. It's their loss at the end of the day but it is their business.

Plus any punishment they get at the hands of the criminal justice system but I'm assuming that isn't a problem

Refusing to do business with someone on the basis of their sexuality, gender, disability or race is against the law. That is all and what I am talking about. It isn't my opinion or view of things, it is the law.

I'm not a lawyer or law maker but I am aware that discriminating on the grounds mentioned is against the law and you didn't seem to be so I told you.

No it wouldn't be okay. That would also be discrimination which is illegal and they could be prosecuted and / or sued for it.

If they refused on the basis of discrimination, then no, it wouldn't be ok. Business owners can't refuse service to customers on the basis of not wanting to associate with someone because they've made a personal judgement against them based on who they are.
