Whilst I'm not a fan of dire Sean and dull Billy, homophobia shouldn't be accepted at all. Like other poster/s have said 'What if it was a black couple, etc...?'. I wasn't paying much attention to Corrie (Can you blame me?), so I didn't really witness the whole scene, but Sean and Billy are truly awful characters, wether they were right or wrong.

Recently, a Christian on the GD forum told a poster that his marriage to his husband is not a "real marriage", because the Bible doesn't support homosexuality. I asked him if he would be against interracial marriage if the Bible said it was wrong and after dodging the question several times, he finally answered and said that he wouldn't. He would ignore the Bible if he wanted to, but he didn't seem to care/understand about his blatant hypocrisy. Some people will look for any reason to be homophobic.

It's actually quite sad how many people here support discrimination against gay people. I do truly wonder how many of them support discrimination against poc.

I knew as soon as Sean and the vicar asked for a room that Corrie would deal with it in the most ham-fisted, cringey way possible. The whole scenario just didn't come off natural at all.
I mean Sean's crass comment about pushing the beds together would make anyone feel uncomfortable and was completely unnecessary....just accept the twin room and say nothing, idiot
Also, it was an old style b&b without a computer booking system, so it would be very believable that mistakes happen and the owner's wife could have accidentally overbooked. Of course Sean and the vicar were very quick to jump to conclusions and launch into a full-on tirade against the owner without any proof.
I think in a more realistic world, a couple would be suspicious at best and a little put out, but would like to give the owner the benefit of the doubt that he is being truthful.

But of course Corrie doesn't do subtle.....

Ignoring how the storyliners wrote it as the characters involved, the issue on its own for me is clear cut.

I'm allowed who I want in my house or property, can refuse and deny people for whatever reason I want. But when I run a PUBLIC business providing a service, there is no room for discrimination and any member of the public is allowed and I have to adhere to the rules of that country as I have made my private property now PUBLIC

If it goes against his beliefs and he doesn't believe in the laws that we have, don't open a business.

The whole scene was clumsily done, as we guessed it would be.

We've stayed in many B&B's over the years and no way if we were given twin room ( and we often were) would I be so crass as to say we would put them together. Just wouldn't be an option.
If they wanted a double they should have gone elsewhere.

I absolutely agree with this. Would anybody, straight or gay, come out with "we can push the beds together". It was just a bit unnecessary. And i do agree that there could easily have been a mistake about double booking but of course Sean immediately assumed the worse, same as he did with Emily.

The trouble is though, we, the audience, saw the Landlords reaction to the "push the beds together" so it was clear to us it was homophobic. But neither Sean or Billy were looking at him then so perhaps should have given the benefit of the douvt. But then i suppose that is how homophobia doesn'"t get confronted - not being sure.

Perhaps if the scenes were played by two competent actors, then Corrie might have got away with it, as it is, this pair of p*ss poor specimens engender absolutely zero interest on the rights and wrongs of the whole affair. Standing there with their arms folded looking like a pair of startled hens with their feathers all ruffled. Who could take either of them seriously?

Maybe, if the producer was not so enamoured of the acting talents of Mr Cotton and put another couple in the same situation, for instance, Todd with a boyfriend? Todd is at least a credible actor unlike Sean and Billy. The it might just have worked, or maybe not........

The awful "writing" didn't help either.

Unbelievably awful writing; the writer should be sacked. Sean's remark "We can put the beds together" nudge, nudge, wink, wink, was salacious whether the couple are gay or straight and would have offended the other people in the pub. We have worked hard to get homosexual vicars accepted in the C.of E, but it is still a sensitive subject and Billy, who seems a nice chap, would not cloudy the waters with this sort of behaviour. I wouldn't have Sean sleeping under my roof whether he was gay, straight or the village goat

Were they going to have sex though? I thought the pushing the beds together comment was just a jokey throw away comment. Crass and vulgar maybe but then that is Sean's character.

I think it was put there for the landlord to have a reason to react the way he did as otherwise even though the couple are camp as Christmas the the dumb owner wouldn't have a had a clue they were gay.


I don't think there was any way that was a just a mistake because as you've suggested Corrie clearly wanted to make a point. I personally believe the overriding issue with this story line like any story line involving Sean is that no one likes Sean and therefore it is impossible to sympathise or care with anything that happens to him.

He is god awful and I find it impossible to believe anyone could like the character let alone love him and watch with incredulity as Marcus before and now Billy say they care for and love him Corrie really needs to get rid of him as he is ruining any attempts to make decent story lines about gay characters.

Anyone who thinks it's ok for what this landlord did has clearly never been a victim of discrimination. In this case, it is about sexuality, so it's likely those who agree with the landlord are straight and likely homophobic themselves, but will declare they have nothing against homosexuality and claim they have many gay friends.

Just imagine if this was a black, interracial or disabled couple. But i forgot, sexuality is different.

The problem with people like this landlord, is they assume homosexuals will engage in homosexual activity under their house. Because in the eyes of many homophobes, homosexuals are sexual deviants who do nothing but have sex and try to covert others into becoming one of "them". They also assume if they have sex in one of their beds, they feel this will lead to an outbreak of HIV/Aids. Ignorance is bliss.

While this storyline wasn't hardly well acted or written, it is has obviously done it's job to lead to a debate about it on here.

Do public houses still display a notice over the door to say 'We reserve the right to refuse admission' ? This would put them in a different category to B & B's and hotels.

It doesn't matter Janet, it is illegal to discriminate on grounds of race, gender, disability or sexuality. There are of course other reasons to discriminate like if someone was wielding a weapon or offensively swearing. You would be your rights to refuse to do business with someone then.

Its interesting that being as it is Sean how people have reacted to it. It doesn't matter whether you like Sean or not, he had a right to not be discriminated against. Gay, Black, Disabled all minorities have annoying people in them. Do all gay people have to be perfect and endearing to allow them to have their rights? If they are an irritating person then are we saying they deserve it?!

I'm no Sean fan but the landlord was a bigot. He was happy for them to stay until he clocked they were gay (i have no idea how just looking at Sean he hadn't sussed it already!!).
Don't run a B+B if you are going to refuse qay couple just for their sexuality. No excuse.

Daniel Brocklebank is a decent actor and Billy is a good character, his downfall is pairing him with Sean.

Why couldn't Billy have got with Todd? Then this storyline would've been credible at least.

There is so much to explore with Todd unlike Sean who just grates and irritates and has zilch depth.
