i-phone 4: broken screen

Does anyone know - is it normal for an i-phone to switch itself off when the screen breaks? I dropped it flat on its back but it kept on working for 2 days even though the screen was riddled with cracks. Today it stopped being responsive to touch, then stopped working completely (as though it had switched itself off even though it was fully charged). But some small pieces of the glass were loose/had fallen out by then - would this cause it to power off?
