The new series needs to come back with a something? The Doctor needs to have some kind of authority, South park style The Doctor has been working up to something, meeting River again? meeting The Master? Meeting another Doctor? Challenge? Doctor needs a challenge Sorry, just something out of nothing.

The phrase 'The Doctor's been working up to something' implies to me that he's been preparing for something that's not happened. The confrontation with the Master has happened for this incarnation of the Doctor.

River is a great character, she has great strength even though there was those who tried.

You think the confrontation is important, why so?

Steven Moffat loves River because she is a character, nothing else. Mwah ( made you laugh)

Well, it was the resolution to 12's series 8 character arc.

I'm not so sure, I think Sue Vertue could have competition with a fictional character...

Why so, am sure Steven's wife had some input towards River's character, makes sense.

But that's the point, she hasn't seen him since he regenerated so it would be fun to see what she makes of his new appearance/attitude.

I like it when characters meet different incarnations. When people say 'that character was only that certain doctor only, or anything of that nature, it's as though they are forgetting for a moment that the doctor is one character and not 12 different ones. Having odd characters from the past turn up from time to time and them reminiscing only reinforces that. Not to mention that River actually started in 10's era, or the fact that jack was successfully a big part of both 9 and 10's era and Sarah Jane Smith was reoccuring in 10's era years after being a part of both 3 and 4's eras. Blurring the lines between the incarnations by having someone who knew him previously come along and still recognise that he is still the same man despite the surface changes serves to reinforce and strengthen the central character of the doctor.

I'd happily see river back any time.

Plot twist: Steven Moffat is the secret inventor of a time machine and met his wife in the wrong order.

(On another note, River Song's timeline always reminds me of the Morecambe and Wise quote 'I played all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order'. Could Moffat have been inspired by that classic TV sketch?)

The Doctor needs to hear River's truth so he can stand there and take in what she says because he so needs truth as like, before so he can settle as in like the wind, gentle breeze but The Doctor knows that, as like before and many times before because River does that because she flows, sweet.

Opinions on a character are of course fine, but this era-specific mindset is still one I don't get.

It's like me telling my friends I can no longer be friends with them, because they belong firmly in my Secondary School Years and cannot possibly play a role in my life now. I'm a changed guy now, with new shiny friends!

Never say never if they could come up with a good story why not ?. River was big part of his life. Wasn't just his wife she is Amy and Rory's daughter. She connects him to his past and lost friends through that. Wonder what he would say to her if they met ?.

Thanks for quoting that post - or we may never have seen that DB gem.

I loved River but surely her story is done now.
When we met her with 10 we knew there was a story with a future Doctor to be played out and that we were seeing the end.
Unless it was some sort of "rescue" from the library type of angle then it just doesn't make any sense for her to have any dealings with 12

I think River remains Moffatt's most successful companion with the public. The massive 50th anniversary Radio Times poll had her score more votes than Amy, Rory or Clara.

Okay, here's something.

Last Christmas ended with the Doctor and Clara running off together like a couple of excited school-kids. How about series 9 carries on where this left off? The Doctor and Clara are travelling through time and space having fun and adventures, when at some point, after another successful adventure, they snog

We know that Clara and the Doctor get separated at some point in the opening two-parter, and Clara meets up with Missy who reveals the Doctor is in trouble. There's a good way to throw them apart as they both decide they shouldn't and can't travel together anymore. Then when they get back together at the end of episode 2 they simply agree never to mention "the incident" ever again.

Come on - those two are so loved up an accidental snog is totally plausible and would give Capaldi a great chance to show off his comedy skills.
