i bought this a few months back and still havent sat down to watch it
i hope its good ![]() ![]() ![]() Talons Of Weng Chiang was another really creepy one! Back to Key To Time Though, its very creaky, but has its moments. The voice-overs by Tom & Mary are absolutely hilarious! their 'thesp' humor really comes through. Tom talking about an actress's 'stagey' performance "Love those nostrils flaring!" ![]() ![]() Again, that had some scary moments for me - the first two episodes of 'The Stones Of Blood' had an occult theme, then it all goes 'Crystal maze'?! WTF?! Mary deserved at least one more series! She was one of the few assistants with Tom, that wasn't 'damsel-in-distress', maybe that was the problem?

He did appear in The Three Doctors though, 'as seen on TV.'
Weren't the scenes filmed at his home and later edited into the show. He was apparently too ill to travel to the studios. There were two photoshoots of all 3 docs done (a BBC one for the Radio Times; and an outdoor press one). It's been said one of those was done at Hartnell's cottage (hence the confusion) but I'm not sure anybody knows/remembers for certain. (* DWM was very unreliable it its early days. They once said the early episodes went out live. And they got quite a run on "The War Games" being the "longest story".) |

Well, put it this way: do you really think they'd axe the Doctor Who equivalent of Princess Diana (in terms of popularity)?

What about William Hartnell, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann? It was only Colin Baker who was actually sacked and replaced whilst the show was on the air. |

Hartnell wasn't forced out, he eventually accepted his health was becoming an issue and stood aside. McCoy was only sacked in that the entire show was cancelled, technically he was still the Doctor for spin off media etc. McGann only ever had a contract for one movie, and again was still the Doctor for spin off media etc.
It was only Colin Baker who was actually sacked and replaced whilst the show was on the air. |

As well as the above, however, it's no secret that certain people wanted him gone, totally unfairly.

Well, he's probably more comparable to Prince Harry popularity (popular but not as popular as others higher up).

Tom was close to Sladen, but his motivation to travel alone after her departure was principally he didn't feel an assistant was needed, as he could carry the show alone.
He carried on this same request throughout most of his tenure. |

And I do feel sorry for Colin Baker, being remember as the Doctor who was sacked. Why does no one remember that McCoy got the show cancelled! ![]() ![]() ![]() Both Colin and Sylvester are and forever will be remembered by the general public as the "lost Doctors", so they're very much in the same boat IMHO. Anyone remember when Mark Gatiss referred to them as "any ****er with an Equity card"? |

A lot of DW assistants didn't go on to have fantastic careers after their DW experience, and some say it killed their career entirely. It's a very different world now, compared with Back In The Day.

I get the impression the actors who played the Doctor back in the 80s didn't earn an awful lot.

I'm not aware that Pertwee and Baker spoke to each other. I can imagine that neither of them would have been friends.

Except he wasn't "sacked". That term suggests the termination of an ongoing contract, usually as a result of misconduct by the employee. In reality, the BBC merely declined the option to extend a contract which was drawn up in their favour.

That's absolutely true. Typecasting was a big problem back then in TV. If an actor was a star of a big series, they often found they coudn't get another job. So different from today, when Doctor Who made David Tennant into the actor everybody wanted in everything and he's not been off the screen since.
One pilot not taken up & one other only had one series. Never mind DT, there's still Virgin Media & countless voiceovers. |

Oh yes how terrible for him. Only being a highly respected and sought after actor in the UK.
