I'm in Canada, and my favourite soap for years was "All My Children". Since it got yanked off the air, though, I've given up completely on soaps.
I used to watch Corrie on CBC religiously, but once AMC stopped airing, I stopped watching Corrie as well. Used to watch EastEnders on CBC during the '80s and really liked it, with young Sharon, Michelle, Angie, Den and those rogue Mitchell brothers, Phil and Grant. |

Days of our Lives ........... is one of the longest-running scripted television programs in the world, airing nearly every weekday since November 8, 1965.
It has since been syndicated to many countries around the world Days of Our Lives aired its 10,000th episode on February 21, 2005 and its 12,000th episode aired on January 11, 2013. The show was given the title of most daring drama in the seventies due to covering topics other soaps would not dare to do Wonder why its never hit the UK screens ? |

Sadly, Days is not in good health right now. Shame, as it's 50 this year. |

The Bold & the Beautiful returned to the UK about a month ago on its own dedicated youtube channel. It's specifically and only for the UK, so you won't be blocked. Link below.

I'm in NZ, we have Shortland Street - the soap that Adam Rickett was on (Nick Tilsley 2.0) It is quite popular here, along with Corrie and the Aus soaps.

It has on several occasions. I think Days first aired on Sky Soap in the 90s. It then replaced Sunset Beach (after it ended) on Channel 5 for a year, before getting axed due to poor ratings. Days then appeared on CBS Drama a few years ago, but was pulled due to budget issues, I think.
Sadly, Days is not in good health right now. Shame, as it's 50 this year. |

Yeah Days days are numbered. On Friday Daytime Confidential got a look a the hacked sony emails and one of them stated that NBC planned to cancel Days for another talks show before its last renewal and only got renewed when Sony decided to reduce the fee it charges NBC for Days
Plus, Days apparently does much better with DVR recordings added to the ratings. But, as it turns out, DVR recordings for Daytime aren't added to Neilson data like with prime time shows. On a side note: Y&R does super well with DVR recordings, cracking the 5 million mark. |

I've seen those leaked emails, and actually, it turned out to be one executive who wanted to replace Days with a talk show - the rest were actually more in favour of keeping Days, as it was more financially to their liking. Plus, this one exec doesn't actually have any say on the matter, just airing his opinion. It was actually quite surprising to read that NBC is more in favour of keeping Days than they are in axing it.

As for Days, it might have been safe 2 years ago but I have a feeling it won't make it much past it's 50th, honestly I'm surprised it outlasted All My Children and One Life to Live as NBC has tried to get rid of it several times dating back to the 90's |

Are you sure that's true about the ratings? My parents became a Nelsen house and they are tracking everything, they said it didn't matter if t was on on your computer, hulu or netflix their equipment recognizes the show by the sound and its tracked that way. I watch emmerdale by downloading torrents and stream it to the tv and when I watch it over my parents house I have to turn the Nelsen box on for it.

For how long? Who knows. |

My fav soap at the moment is Reign. It's about Mary Queen of scots and her rise to power. It's like The Tudors meets 90210. It isn't historically acurate but it isn't meant to be. It has all the typical soap storylines you would think, but with a period drama twist set against real life situations. There's sex, beheadings, treason and a load of lies. Season 2 ends soon, with Season 3 to begin in September/October.

Japan probably too, and no doubt China has got a few in production In the US, where TV soaps began, the 1970s also saw huge ratings in daytime for soaps. Most soaps at the time expanded from screening a 30 minute episode each weekday, to a 60 minute episode each day. The 1980s continued the trend, and soaps in the evening became bigger than ever. Daytime soaps hit high ratings and General Hospital was a firm favourite. But fast forward to today and things are very different. Now there are just four US daytime serials. From wikipedia: Quote:
Since January 2012, four daytime soap operas – General Hospital, Days of our Lives, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful – continue to air on the three major networks, down from a total of 12 during the 1990–91 season and a high of 19 in the 1969–70 season. This marks the first time since 1953 that there are only four soap operas on broadcast television. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap_opera#Decline
Continental Europe I think had few soaps until the 1990s when remakes of Australian soap The Restless Years were launched in Germany and Holland.
