Meh. Not a bad film but not great either. I suspect CG Cushing just took me out of it, I don't think that worked.
Begin your hyperbolic comments praising it... now. |

I came out of this movie feeling incredibly cold:
- NO connection with any characters. Nothing to root for whatsoever. Where as with Force Awakens I could go "Oh BB8 was hilarious, Rey and Finn were really cool together and Poe was pretty cool if underutilised", with this movie I know none of their names other than Jyn, and none of the characters got given any form of character development because the movie was so action heavy. - The action... wasn't that varied. It was just people shooting each other and blowing each other up. Great. Thanks. Incredibly boring 2 and a half hour watch. The only saving graces were Donnie Yen and Darth Vader, the 2 characters in the film who could use the force. Which is problematic because it proves that Star Wars is nothing without the force/jedi/sith. - The deaths (thats not a spoiler because of course certain characters are going to die) were all incredibly anti-climactic. One could argue that in war death happens swiftly and suddenly and thus this movie nails it. But for pete's sake, not one death felt satisfiying at all. And when you combine that with no connection to the characters you get an incredibly disjointed experience. - The references to the other movies while brief were incredibly poorly shoe-horned in for the sake of winking to the audience. - The CGI of those 2 familiar characters. The one who appeared in the final scene was incredibly well done, but the other one? Who had about 5 or 6 scenes? So incredibly jarring. Couldn't focus at all on what that character was saying because it was so off putting. - Vader. Vader has 2 scenes in this movie, the first is so incredibly pointless and offers literally nothing of value to the film, and the 2nd while great lasts only 3 minutes. What is the point of having Vader in a movie like this and utilising him so little? Could have been a great, great Star Wars movie, but the execution was SO poor. Thanks to this leaving such a bad taste in my mouth I'm now also feeling skeptical about all the upcoming movies now that they're pumping them out anually, and I feel heartbroken saying that as I loved all 7 previous Star Wars movies. I give Rogue One a 4/10, I wish I had seen the movie those hyperbolic "WOW ITS THE BEST STAR WARS SINCE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ITS SO GOOD!!" had seen. |

Begin your hyperbolic comments praising it... now. It was f****** amazing! I like emotional action films and Rogue One certainly fills that role. There's a lot of nostalgia but, except for one instance, it works to the benefit of the setting of the film, being just before A New Hope. The end battle is definitely the best of all the Star Wars films and the best I've seen outside of a straight war film. There's an amazing horror scene at one point that I was watching in shock. I'll have to see it a few more times to know for certain if it's my favourite out of them all. But I'm already pretty sure it is. I'm feeling like the first time I saw the recent Battlestar Galactica. Suddenly all of that campy Star Trek stuff I'd been so enamoured by before just didn't compare. |

Thought this was pretty good, not as emotionally packed like TFA - as a stand alone Star Wars film, it delivered - it took awhile to get going, 20 mins or so - but when it did, the action, characters and story kicked in big time...'guest' appearances were amazing, last one, jaw dropping.
Overall 8/10 |

I loved it, this was the prequel to ep4 I wanted, this should be film 3.5 rather than a stand alone. This blows films 1-3 out of the water. The storyline, the effects all top notch in leading up to the events in ep4. People saying that the nods to the original were not needed, of course they were, this was the direct link to ep4 and set in that timeline. Half way through the movie you knew what the final scene was going to be and would have been disappointing if that scene was not included. My only gripe was some weak acting in the first half.

Not bad overall, a mix of a happy and sad ending and a good lead in to Episode 4

Nice little cameos in

Didn't mind Vader having a bit part in this, that scene in the bacta tank was reminiscent of when Piett saw him in the chamber without his helmet. And his last scene was set up nicely to follow through to Episode 4 |

A mixed bag, but overall it was decent.
The first half hour or so was a bit disjointed as it tried to hit the ground running. There's very little in the way of charisma, I struggled to care that much about the central rebel characters. The soundtrack definitely lacked the usual SW warmth, and that had an big impact on the overall feel. I really don't mind a darker tone, Empire was dark, but it had charisma and warmth in spades. The eyes let CG Tarkin down, otherwise it wasn't a bad effort. Leis was less successful. The beach action and the space battle scenes were fine, but a bit generic. The final 10 minutes are great, and the final 2 are tremendous. 7/10 - Overall in 5th position, behind the OT and TFA. Also behind some Clone Wars and Rebels episodes (speaking of which it was good see the Ghost a couple of times during the space battle scenes) |

Thought it was good but flawed:
It really needed an opening crawl to see everything up I didn't like the font used for the title screen. The musical score badly missed John Williams CGI Tarkin looked a bit off and should've been limited to a brief cameo like

Worth it all though to see

It ticks all the boxes you would expect from a Star Wars film, but there were small errors. Mainly continuity mistakes, which have happened in all Star Wars films, so I'm guessing it's a running joke by now. However, lots of wonderful nods to the original and it ties in with the prequel trilogy as well as Clone Wars and Rebels.
It's certainly up with the best of the Star Wars films, is it the best? I don't think so, but this does the job it was asked to do, a stand alone film with a fairly familiar story. It was billed as a war movie and it had that feel to it. Will have to see a few times to get a real sense of it, and more familiar with the script, but that wasn't something I was intending on doing with this film, but due to being so good I've changed my mind. |

Went to the premier screening at the IMAX and while it wasn't the best Star Wars film to date, I did prefer it over the previous prequels. Yes I missed not having the screen crawl, but other than that I loved everything else about the film.

Loved it, much better than Force Awakens. A better story, better action scenes, more believable, LOVED the nods to A New Hope, the same Death Star booting up sequence, the same Rebel Commanders etc, and loved the tie in with the original trilogy, especially the last scene.
A proper prequel. |

Much better then i expected, not being a great fan of any modern Wars film (TFA was only good when any of the Originals were on screen) and felt much closer in tone and feel to the Originals then the last four films. Loved playing spot the cameos, some really obscure ones. Storywise filled in the blanks that led up to a New Hope nicely - and that ending was perfect !

I had avoided trailers and any plot leaks for this film and was so glad I did.
It was so much darker than I expected. I was concerned when I knew there would be a standalone but Gareth Edwards delivered. First 20 mins dragged a bit but then the momentum just kept growIng and that last 5 mins....still haven't got over it. Really liked the cast chemistry & it made me want to put New Hope on as soon as I got in! Really enjoyed it 8.5/10 |

I enjoyed it but it's not as great as the hype says it is!
It's strange as it doesn't really feel like a Star Wars film despite the X wings,Death Star etc but more like a war film which is what I expected from it despite the misleading trailers. It's a pity that there isn't more character development or back story given to the main team as it's only Jyn that you really know but that's just the basics! It does fit perfectly into Star Wars:A New Hope though! 8/10 or maybe I'm being generous as I'm unsure and the film needs a rewatch! |

I enjoyed it, although it was by no means perfect. The CGI for the two old character cameos wasn't quite good enough. Both of them should've been seen in shadows or reflections or something. It was cool to see Darth Vader's 'house' and it was great to see him kick arse toward the end (although it did rather highlight how pedestrian the lightsabre battle was in the original Star Wars).

it's pretty good , altho it very much stands on the shoulders of the OT , lots of fangasm type shots but not much in original ideas , the acting while very serious doesn't really produce any icons . the 2nd hour is better ( at least there's some sunlight !) Tarkin looks better than I expected .

True but perhaps Darth is a bit knackered by the time he faces old Ben Kenobi on the Death Star. He's probably on the go right through into Episode 4 and hasn't had a chance to chill out in his tank again

First half I could hardly make out what was happening, the visuals were so dark and gloomy. Didn't help that I was wearing 3D glasses though.
I thought it was great fun. If this is a sign of things to come with the franchise, then I'm up for it. |

I enjoyed it however I think it's a good movie, not an excellent one.
It did a great job of showing the day to day oppression of imperial rule (troopers walking through the marketplace and the imperials harbouring natural resources with little consideration for the inhabitants) and it had a strong cast. I like how we saw the rebels fighting dirty and being clandestine too. Couple of things I didn't like though

Reboots always seem to be trading on the memory of the original in order to disguise the uninspiring film-making.
At the time a film will seem good even great, but a year later it can be seen more clearly. Not seen Rogue One and probably won't bother, Star Wars 8 will be my next SW film. |

Well I had a great time at the cinema tonight.
Superb entertainment. Weaves into Episode 4 nicely. Dark, sad, funny. Proper Star Wars. Pity about the CGI. Reminded me of the story cinematics from Diablo 2, circa 2000. For me, this tops The Force Awakens. I have the death sentence on 12 systems. Loved it. |
