Just saw it. Finally. I actually found it more emotionally 'resonant' than TFA. They're different types of movies i know, but felicity was gr8, and I could relate to her more than the horsey St Trinians vibe that Daisy gives off.
The beginning set the stage perfectly with Jyns Mothers murder. I guess i'm out of the loop when it comes to spfx because I thought Tarkin & Leia looked amazing. I was expecting something akin to Jabba in ANH - remixed version.Which was HORRIFIC! Krennic was a brilliant baddie! Loved the way Tarkin was playing his achievements off, stirring the pot, so to speak. Nice touch with the terrorist Ugnaught! And a probe droid flits past fleetingly on Jedha in the crowd! And K2 - whatta droid! Very drool. Completely stands up with R2 & 3PO. Talking of which... slight continuity problem...?! Unless that Mon Calamari cruiser was super fast in picking them up from Yavins 4th moon!I can see there wasn't room for too much 'emotional depth' with the band of heroes backing Jyn, but still found Baze & Chirrut's end scenes quite touching in their own way as was K2 finally succumbing to gunfire. Definitely the most 'morally ambiguous' of the SW canon, so, in that way I can see why its a 'standalone'. 3rd after Empire & ANH. They've set the bar high for these anthology movies... |

It was quite refreshing seeing how they managed to get the plans to the death star in a time when there weren't very many Jedi around and how it was in-keeping with the originals. I liked how it lead up to a New Hope, and in some way has made me think about episode 4 differently.

Shame the Death Star blew up Alderaan as whatever was in their water was great on the old aging process.
Bail Organa hasn't aged a day between Revenge of The Sith and Rogue One, which is set hours before A New Hope. Ben Kenobi in that same period has aged from Ewan McGregor to Alec Guinness. Damn those Tatooine suns! |

Completely agree about the impact. I've no idea how much of Vader was originally meant to be in our what was changed or added, but I came away thinking that his first appearance should have been in the dark corridor at the end when we hear his breathing and then his light saber ignites... That was pretty awesome!

His earlier scenes added nothing and if anything took me out of it as I listened to Old James Earl Jones voice.
Although it was rumoured for years, it was good to get confirmation that Vader lives on Mustafar, where he had his duel with Kenobi. Which makes sense; it's the place where he experienced the most intense hate in his life, and the Sith draw their power from hate.

Saw it today and loved it. Have seen all the SW films now so it's difficult to judge if it can truly standalone, but for me it smashed the re-hashed, nostalgia-fest that was TFA out of the park and is probably only behind Empire for fluidity and both Empire and the original SW for emotional impact after I left the cinema. And it definitely beats both of them for jokes. In fact, if not for the impossible-to-avoid spoilers dulling certain surprises I would have probably put it as my favourite of all the films. It's not perfect of course. If I was an actor, I'd be much more worried by the CGI in Terminator Genisys than here and I got a pungent whiff of ham while Forest Whitaker was on the screen. And I usually like him. Also ditto those who say Vader's first appearance should have been in the corridor. Now that would have been amazing....

I saw this last night and I loved it. Terrific film. I don't have any problems with the CGI'd Leia and Tarkin. Presumably her scene was done with Carrie Fisher's consent, and Tarkin was a role that Peter Cushing did play in life. I was sitting three rows from a big screen and, although I knew I was looking at CGI, it wasn't obvious. I was particularly impressed with the way that they managed to replicate Cushing's facial mannerisms. Best of the lot, in my opinion, was Felicity Jones, a real barnstorming performance - all 5' 3" of her. She is developing into a major star.

Slightly disappointed we didn't get more of the relationship between Tarkin and Darth Vader, IIRC wasn't Vader Tarkin's subordinate in A new hope?

I thought Leia in the end looked a bit cheap, they should have just done it without showing her face we all knew who it was!
Great Vader scene at the end, amazing! |

My only real problem is this... what happens next?
Spoiler
Once in hyperspece she should be safe to take the plans back to Yavin. Instead it seems she diverts all the way out to Tatoonie to ask Kenobi to join the rebellion. Bit of an odd choice but still it shouldn't really matter as The Empire shouldn't know where she's gone. So how come Vader is able to track Leia down so quickly? I know there's lots of ways for it to happen but I'm just a little frustrated that the end of R1 seems to lead straight into EpIV but there has to be some intervening period for Vader to track Leia down. |

So watched it yesterday.
As a fan of the original 3 and TFA but not really into the whole back story I thought it was a great film and thought the bit with leia at the end was excellent. |

This film left a sour after-taste, for me. What kind of Star Wars film is it where all the heroes die? Star Wars was always a feel-good romp of an adventure where good triumphs over evil. Nothing feel-good about the end of this one. There were some great moments and some great fight scenes but having all the people you’re rooting for die just made the whole thing pointless. Even the little girl she saved ends up dying in a huge explosion a short time later.
There’s a level where I can see the worthy dramatic impact of all that bravery and self-sacrifice resulting in the means to destroy the Death Star in episode IV but this just didn’t feel like Star Wars to me. Or Disney either, for that matter! |

This is exactly why I give kudos to Disney to sticking with a script and story which is a departure from typical Star Wars expectation and delivering a film with drama and some emotional weight for a change.

By all means go for that stuff with other movies but not with a beloved franchise which became beloved precisely because of it's feel-good nature. Kudos is the last thing I'd give them. |

One not worth spoiler tags presumably. Cheers, btw.
What else is the thread for if not to discuss what we've seen

Sorry, I've spoilered it now but I don't really understand why we would need to use spoiler tags in a thread about a movie that's been released. It doesn't say no spoilers in the title.

Joy and hope and triumph are emotions too. It's an annoying trend in modern times that entertainment isn't considered good enough if it doesn't feature enough tragedy and depressing 'realism'.

It had too much fan wank and not enough character development.
I agree with red letter media that Felicity Jones does nothing but make Daisy Ridley look better. |
