No thanks.”

You do know the current title sequence came from a fan film, right?

I think I'm more sure than ever. It would be horrible. Maybe I'm a joyless bitch but I just found that really annoying.

Well, except that, no, it didn't come from a fanfilm. Apart from that, you're bang on though

Depends what you define as 'fan film'. To me, a fan film is any video about a already existing property.

No, DB. The titles are not from a fanfilm. It's really that simple.

Doctor Who: The Musical has 33,186 likes. Surely the same should apply for fan films?

The YouTube video is popular, yet your response suggest it doesn't prove a Doctor Who musical can work when you called me up on saying River Song being annoying isn't a reason for her not returning because she could be popular to other people.

Although it's called "Doctor Who: The Musical", the YouTube video is actually just one song. A better title might be "Doctor Who: The Song", and it proves that a Doctor Who song can work.

That still doesn't prove anything about whether a Doctor Who musical can work. It's a lot harder to make a real musical than just one song.

I can't believe it's being debated. A Doctor Who musical would be horrible. Just throwback to getting the show taken the piss out of again like it was relentlessly before 2005.

See, I love the Buffy musical episode, it was excellent. But it seems to have set a precedent that fans want every Cult/Sci Fi TV Show to have a musical episode. ._.

It just wouldn't fit Doctor Who. Buffy was always a little cheesy though, so it worked.

Buffy started out pretty camp, as you say. Personally I don't understand why Once More With Feeling is held in such high esteem, I always found it a bit grating. But it worked because there's magic in the Buffy universe. What would be the reason for The Doctor and Clara to start singing and dancing? A force field? A show for the Dalek's at plunger-point? No. It would be contrived and ridiculous.

Has "Les Miserables" led to Victor Hugo's novel having the piss taken out of it? Has "Phantom of the Opera" led to Gaston Leroux's book getting that treatment? Has "Billy Elliot: The Musical" harmed the film's reputation? Has "Mama Mia" caused Abba to become a laughing stock?

Of course not. Even when a musical fails, such as "Viva Forever", it doesn't damage the source material's reputation.

So why should a DW musical end up with DW getting the piss taken out of it again?

That's not the problem. The problem is whether a DW musical will be good in its own right. I'm not convinced that it will. In fact it will probably be awful. But either way, it won't affect the show.

Obviously they shouldn't try to make a musical episode. That would be silly. Just do the musical as a stage play, like Seven Keys To Doomsday back in the day.

Ah, yes. Buffy was always a little cheesy, but Doctor Who was always very, very cheesy. That's a big difference.

Christ. Alright, maybe a flippant remark. But cheers for creating an overly long post to prove me wrong as effectively as possible! Well done!

Of course we had a stage show with songs. And DWM had a comic strip where everyone sang on a particular planet, I recall. On TV.....nah. Although I am now rather fond of Rings of Akhaten, think that's as far as Who should go, personally.

'Mamma Mia' damn well should have been cause for people to be burning piles of Abba records in the street. Or at least setting fire to their Ipods and hissing in the general direction of the local Ikea. Quite how anyone's reputation escaped that veritable car crash is one of modern history's minor miracles. Streep and Brosnan and Walters shouldve been sent to the Hague not to awards shows. I had always assumed it was thanks to the 'irony is wonderful brigade' but I actually have had real life conversations with real people who actually enjoyed it. Which just goes to prove there's nowt as dumb as folk.

But even that episode pushes its luck rather a lot. Not so much the song. It's cute enough and the girl sings it ok until Murray Gold pushes the 'EMOTE' button and it all descends into syrupy gloopy mess which actually spoils Matt's rather splendid oratory. No. That's fine. But the moment the row upon row of cheap alien extras start swaying in time to the song like some bizarrely sedated chorus line is up there with the very very very worst that Doctor Who has put on screen. It's actually pain inducingly terrible. I can barely sit through it.

I'm not reading all that. So fine. You win. Maybe they could cast Amanda Holden. I'm going for a cry.

Heh. I love the speech, but do see where you're coming from. Was very underwhelmed at the time, but just like the episode on rewatch despite the cheesiness anyway. Funny like that.

Better viewing than Mama Mia?
