EE- Pauline McLynn Stopped EE Writers From Making Father Ted References
Shane Parrish
22-04-2015
Apparently Pauline McGlynn stopped Eastenders writers from making reference ms from Father Fed like Go On or Will You Have A Cup Of Tea. The actress seems to want to forget about her Father Ted role. It was the role though that nurtured her career. She even turned down the reunion three years ago.

They should've persuaded her to act out those scenes by saying "go on, go on, go on".

I hope she briefly comes back to tie up any loose ends. She left so abruptly. Has she moved back to Ireland?

Think she had a short term contract to reintroduce Nick.

I kept waiting for Yvonne to make some tea !

I can totally understand if she asked the script writers not to put it in though.
Father Ted was a brilliant show but it was years ago.

They were planning a reunion? How was that possible without Dermot Morgan?

Re not wanting EE to reference it, i completely understand that. It doesn't mean she is snobby or ungrateful but they are completely different roles and it would be breaking the fourth wall to reference it.

It would be pointless without him.

It wasn't a reunion, it was a documentary on Channel 4 broadcast a few years ago called Small, Far Way - The World of Father Ted. It was stated in it that Pauline McLynn declined to take part in the documentary.

Especially when having sex with Nick

Oh I see. Well that may indicate she wants to distance herself from it which perhaps isn't surprising as she has been trying to forge a 'serious' acting career and perhaps didn't want people to be reminded of it to stop typecasting.

Or she might just have been busy with other work.

I saw her being interviewed on This Morning and they asked her about it. She didn't make a huge deal of it but she was a bit miffed the Father Ted programme said that because she maintained she was working (doing a play I think) and simply couldn't make it. IIRC she talked about Father Ted quite happily (not in depth) and that it gave her her big break and she was grateful to it. So God knows!

Having said that, it must get annoying having one role following you about so much you can't even mention cups of tea or say 'go on' without a section of the population creasing up

I agree. Maybe Pauline thought the character wouldn't be taken seriously if they did things like that.

I've always got a vibe from her in interviews on Irish TV and the like that she considers herself a "real actress" and doesn't like being only attached to that role even though the remainder of her career has been lackluster in comparison with that role.

Exactly.

I really don't understand the attitude many seem to have that actors must always do every reunion or go back to shows and if they don't they are 'ungrateful'. Typecasting is a real problem, it can damage or even destroy their career and if they want some distance so they can continue to make a living I don't seen anything wrong with that.

Polus there is always the possibility that they are just unavailable.

I suppose factually channel 4 were correct - she did decline to appear. But that might have been because she couldn't due to prior commitments.

I don't think I'd have been able to take her seriously. EE is not a ++++ take, it's a bit different to say a Catherine Tate sketch referencing actors former characters. Quite frankly i didn't even like the "Get Outta My Pub" from Mick to Peggy. It was too self referential. Fine for a CIN sketch but not the main show. They only got away with it because it was part of live week and the anniversary celebrations but it was still teetering on a line as far as i was concerned.

If Julianne Moore can credit As the World Turns in her GG speech and do a cameo in it in 2010 then Pauline can discuss Father Ted. The only reason an actor wouldn't is if they aren't comfortable with how their career has panned out.

Whatever about "go on" but "will you have a cup of tea" is hardly that dramatic a sentence for a middle aged Irish woman. That is what one would realistic ask everyone if someone arrived at the house.

She did mention "a cup of tea" in one episode, which made me laugh!
