Hi,

We want to move our Master Socket from the kitchen to the hall.

Rang BT - they said that, as we are a Sky customer, we need to ring them and Sky will arrange for Openreach to come round.

Rang Sky - they said that they cannot touch the Master Socket and I need to get BT to do it.

I told Sky what BT had said - the guy checked with his supervisor - the answer was still no, BT do it.

Please can you tell me which one is right.

Thanks.

Who do you pay money to for line rental?

That is who is responsible. It is a very simple rule and works every time

Whether you pay rental to BT or Sky it will be Openreach who more than likely get sent to do the work. But you cannot contract Openreach directly to do this work it can only come from a service provider. So if you pay Sky then it is Sky who call out Openreach. if you pay BT then it is BT.

Just been reading a Sky Community forum thread on this subject.

Looks like Sky haven't got a clue regarding moving the master socket and the conclusion in the last post from a year ago is not very encouraging. Seems Sky can't or won't raise a job with Openreach to move the socket.

Not very helpful really.

Thanks Chris,

So the Sky assistant AND his supervisor are both wrong.

(I thought that BT were probably more likely to be right but Sky were adamant.)

I'll have another go..........

It's worrying that numerous Sky officials on that thread keep recommending that you pay an independent person to do the work, even though it's been repeatedly stated that you or an independent contractor aren't supposed to touch the wiring from outside to master socket.

It's also worrying that even the people working for BT in some official capacity can't do the job properly either (I'd guess it was the likes of Kelly than a real BT technician)

Other than doing a bit of dodgy DIY if Sky do throw their toys out of the pram at the thought of actually contacting Openreach is to use the Openreach External Networkl Relocation facility.

https://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/hom...fact_sheet.pdf

If moving the master socket from one location to another would involve re-routing the outdoor cable that might be an option. Though I suspect it will be neither quick nor cheap!

It might be easier just to either buy a length of CW1308 spec cable and a socket and wire in an extension to the hall rather than move the master or hire in someone to do it for you.

The trouble is that the Master Socket is above the worktop - and we are about to have a lovely new kitchen fitted. I don't want a phone and router in the kitchen and, because of the layout of the house, there is no easy way to get a cable to the hall. Certainly not an attractive way! By far the easiest (although expensive) is from the box outside - literally a couple of feet of cable and drill into the hall.

I thought it was going to be easy.

Anyway, any idea how easy it is to move the phone contract to BT? It won't matter if we are offline for a few days. I know we'll get a new number because the current one is a Sky number. Even if I could force Sky to arrange an Openreach engineer I am sufficiently unimpressed that I am more than happy to move my phone contract to BT.

Do I ring BT or Sky?

Have a read of this

and also

So you do not have to change your number if you don't want to.

One problem with moving phone company is that the likes of Sky won't let you move one without moving the other.

i.e. you'll have to move the broadband too. Decent phone companies and ISPs don't do this, but Sky does. BT doesn't - you can have the phone with them and internet service from someone else

(that said, the good ISPs/phone companies know exactly what you're on about if you phone up asking for the master socket to be moved)

If you are looking to move from Sky to BT and are out of contract with sky the easiest way is to do it through the BT website. You could even check Quidco and Topcashback sites as they often give good cash back when clicking though them first.

You can either keep your existing number or request a new BT number whichever you prefer.

Try and find a local Telecoms installations company. I work for a private firm in Norfolk. I move Master sockets all the time, Granted they are BT's responsibilty but we have the same cable that they use and the same connectors.

If it's a simple job no-one is going to know that someone other than BT have touched the master socket. I know that we charge half the price that BT do for a simple move job.
